High Power AM/FM (120-1996) Cassette Operation Faxback Doc. # 6968 Stereo Car Cassette Player PLAYING A CASSETTE TAPE Warning: To prevent hearing damage, always turn the volume to its lowest level before you begin listening to a tape. Note: Avoid using C-120 cassette tapes. They are very thin and easily become tangled in the tape-handling parts. Follow these steps to play a cassette tape. 1. Take up any tape slack by turning the cassette's hub with your finger or a pencil. (Avoid touching the tape.) 2. Turn ON VOL clockwise to turn on the stereo. 3. Insert the cassette tape into the cassette compartment with its open edge to the right. The tape begins to play. 4. If you are using a metal or CrO2 (TypeII) tape, press MTL (1) so MTL appears on the display. For other tape types, press MTL (1) so MTL does not appear. If you are using a tape recorded with Dolby B NR, press 2 to turn on the Dolby Noise Reduction circuitry. B appears on the display. Press (2) again to turn off the Dolby Noise Reduction circuitry for tapes not recorded with Dolby B NR. 5. Adjust VOL, BASS, TREBLE, BAL and FADER as desired. 6. Press EJECT to stop play and eject the tape. Notes: When the tape reaches the end, the cassette player automatically changes the tape's direction and plays the other side of the tape. Play continues until you press EJECT During play, you can switch to the other side of the cassette by pressing PROG, LEFT ARROW and RIGHT ARROW at the same time. If you play a cassette tape several times, the tape can become tightly wound. This can cause distortion. To restore the correct tension, fast-forward through the entire cassette. Then completely rewind it. FAST-FORWARD AND REWIND To quickly fast-forward or rewind the current side, firmly press PROG, RIGHT ARROW or LEFT ARROW respectively. The button locks and the tape quickly winds. Play resumes when the tape reaches the end. Note: Fast-forward always quickly moves the tape in the same direction the tape is currently playing and rewind always quickly moves the tape in the opposite direction the tape is currently playing. To stop fast winding before the end of the tape, gently press and release the opposite button. Play continues. AUTOMATIC SEARCH MUSIC SYSTEM To rapidly scan a tape so you can quickly locate a song, press ASMS (3) to activate the automatic search music system. ASMS appears on the display. To search for the beginning of the next song, press PROG RIGHT ARROW. To search for the beginning of the current song, press PROG LEFT ARROW. If you want to use the normal fast-forward and rewind modes, press ASMS again so ASMS disappears from the display. CLEANING THE TAPE-HANDLING PARTS Clean the tape head after every 20 hours of playing time. Insert a special head-cleaning cassette (such as Cat. No. 440-1162), and let it run for a few minutes to remove any foreign matter. DEMAGNETIZING THE PLAYBACK HEAD Demagnetize the playback head after every 20 hours of use. Insert a special head-demagnetizer casette (Cat. No. 44-1165) and let it run for a few seconds. REPLACING A FUSE If the stereo does not operate, you might need to replace the red power wire's fuse. If the clock resets or stored stations are lost when the ignition is off, you might need to replace the yellow continuous power wire's fuse. Follow these steps to change a fuse. Warning: Before you begin, turn off the stereo and your vehicle's ignition. 1. Disconnect the red and yellow power wires. 2. Push together and twist the fuse holder's parts until they spring apart. 3. If the fuse is blown, replace it using only a standard 1 1/4 inch fuse with the proper rating. The red power wire's fuse must be 6.0 amps, and the yellow continuous power wire's fuse must be 0.5 amps. 4. Reassemble the fuse holder by inserting the fuse and pushing together and twisting the two parts until they snap together. 5. Reconnect the red and yellow power wires. (SMM/smc-05/06/94)
