4-Way Printer Selector (260-2828) Connecting Faxback Doc. # 7006 * Be sure the computer to selector cables are no longer than 6 feet. * Be sure the selector to printer cable is no longer than 6 feet. * Put the cables where they are not in the way of normal activities. Cautions: * Before you make any connections, turn off your computer and printer equipment. Disconnect the power cords from the back of the computer and the printer. If the computer and printer are on, you could damage them while making connections. * Before you make any connections, touch a well-grounded metal object to ground yourself and discharge any static buildup. Cables: The cables you need and the way you set the Tandy/IBM switch depend on the printer's parallel port type. There are several ways to determine the printer's parallel port type: Most non-Tandy printers have an IBM printer port. Most printers manufactured and sold by Tandy before 1989 have a Tandy Parallel port. If you have a printer with an IBM port, you will need cable 260-0288 or 260- 0289. If you have a printer with a Tandy port, you will need cable 260- 0225 or 260-0227. The input and output cables must also match the printer port configuration. If your printer's parallel port is Tandy, the computer-to-selector cables must be made for a Tandy port. The same is true if your printer port is IBM, the cables must match. The following chart shows the proper cables: Printer Port Input Cables Output Cables Switch Tandy 260-0225/0227 260-0227 Tandy IBM 260-0288/0289 260-0288 IBM Connections: 1. Set the selector's Tandy/IBM switch to the proper position. NOTE: After you have set the Tandy/IBM switch, place a piece of tape over the switch so that it will not be accidentally moved to the wrong position. The wrong setting could damage your computer. 2. Plug one end of each computer cable into the computer. Then, plug the other end of each cable into one of the selector's input ports. NOTE: We suggest you place a small label marked A, B, C, or D on each computer to indicate which port you connected it to. 3. Plug one end of the printer cable into the selector's DB-25 port. Then, plug the other end of the printer cable into the printer. Be sure there is no tension on the printer selector's cable connections. (css 08/05/93)
