SCP-57 (140-1097) Care and Maintenance Faxback Doc. # 7095 The SCP-57 Stereo Cassette Player is an example of superior design and craftsmanship. The following suggestions will help care for the SCP-57 so it can be enjoyed for years. Keep the SCP-57 dry. If its gets wet, wipe it dry immediately. Liquids can contain minerals that corrode the electronic circuits. Use only fresh batteries of the recommended size and type. Always remove old or weak batteries. They can leak chemicals that destroy electronic circuits. Handle the SCP-57 gently and carefully. Dropping it can damage the circuit board and case, and can cause the SCP-57 to work improperly. Use and store the SCP-57 only in normal temperature environments. Temperature extremes can shorten the life of electronic devices, damage batteries, distort or melt plastic parts. Keep the SCP-57 away from dust and dirt, which can cause premature wear of parts. Wipe the SCP-57 with a damp cloth occasionally to keep it looking new. Do not use harsh chemicals, cleaning solvents, or strong detergents to clean the unit. Modifying or tampering with the SCP-57's internal components can cause a malfunction and might invalidate the SCP-57's warranty and void the FCC authorization to operate it. If the SCP-57 is not performing as it should, take it to a local Radio Shack store for assistance. TAPE TIPS AND TECHNIQUES The following tips can help get the best performance and the longest life from the SCP-57. NOTE: For best performance, use only regular length ( 60- or 90- minute) cassette tapes. Long-playing cassette tapes such as C-120's are not recommended because they are extremely thin and easily tangle. LOOSENING TIGHTLY WOUND TAPE If the tape is repeatedly played on both sides without using fast-forward or rewind, the tape can become tightly wound on either hub. This can cause high pitched squeaks during playback, or it can stretch the tape. To loosen tightly wound tape, fast-forward the entire tape, then rewind the entire tape. If problems persist, try this again. CLEANING AND DEMAGNETIZING Dirt, dust, or particles of the tape's coating can accumulate on the tape heads and other parts the tape touches. This can greatly reduce the performance of the SCP-57. The tape head should be cleaned about every 20 hours of tape player operation. A local Radio Shack store sells a complete line of cleaning accessories. The SCP-57's playback head reads magnetized metallic particles on the tapes coating to play the sound. Eventually, the head and other metal parts touched by the tape become slightly magnetized, which reduces the sound quality. To remove this magnetism, use an appropriate demagnetizer, available at the local Radio Shack store. (smc-03/01/94)
