Caller ID System 250 (430-0956) Operation Faxback Doc. # 7125 INSTALLING/REPLACING THE BATTERY The module is powered by a 9-volt battery. For the longest operation, we recommend you use an alkaline battery (Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-553). Even if you use an optional AC adapter, install a battery to keep the information in the module's memory during power failures. When the battery low indicator (- +) appears in the top left corner of the display, or the display dims, replace the battery. Follow these steps to install the battery. 1. If you are replacing the battery, unplug the module from the telephone line and wait for the display to become blank. Caution: Do not press any buttons after you remove the battery. Doing so can delete all information from the module. 2. Slide off the battery compartment cover. 3. Remove the old battery, if necessary. Caution: Be sure to keep a fresh 9-volt battery on hand when you replace the battery. You need to replace the battery within 20 seconds. Otherwise the information kept in the system's memory is lost. 4. Place the battery in the compartment as shown, following the correct polarity (+ and -) as marked on the module's case. Caution: Do not force the battery into the compartment. Place it as shown in the illustration. 5. Replace the cover. SETTING THE LANGUAGE OPTION When you install the battery, the system begins its start-up sequence. The system displays a test screen for several seconds. Next, it displays its total memory capacity. Then the system displays the following screen: To select Spanish messages, press DELETE. To select English messages, press REVIEW RIGHT ARROW. To change the language selection, remove the battery (and unplug the AC adapter, if connected). Then press any button. Caution: Doing so can delete all information from the module. When you install the battery, the system performs the start-up sequence again. CONNECTING TO THE PHONE LINE The module connects to the phone line using a modular telephone-line connector. If your phone line does not have this type of connector, you can get the necessary adapter at your local Radio Shack store. Or, you can have the telephone company update your telephone wiring. Note: The telephone company can charge you to update the telephone wiring. The phone company will ask for the USOC number of the jack to be installed. The USOC number of the jack to be installed is RJ11. Follow these steps to connect the module to the phone line. 1. Unplug the phone's cord from the modular telephone line connector and plug this cord into either of the module's phone jacks. 2. Plug the supplied phone line cord into the module's other modular telephone line connector. 3. Plug the other end of the supplied phone line cord into the modular telephone line connector. CONNECTING AN OPTIONAL AC ADAPTER If you connect the module to AC power using an optional adapter (Cat. No. 273-1650), the message received indicator lights when there is a waiting voice mail message, anonymous call, or a new call. Caution: You must use a Class II AC adapter that supplies 9 volts and delivers at least 50 milliamps. Its center tip must be negative, and its plug must correctly fit the module's 9V-DC jack. Using an adapter that does not meet these specifications could seriously damage the module or the adapter. Follow these steps to connect the adapter. 1. Attach the yellow adaptaplug to the adapter's cord so it reads TIP-NEG. 2. Set the adapter's power switch to 9V. 3. Plug the adapter's barrel plug into the module's 9V-DC jack. 4. Plug the adapter into the wall outlet. ADJUSTING THE DISPLAY CONTRAST Follow these steps to adjust the display's contrast for best visibility. 1. Press and hold down DELETE. 2. While holding down DELETE, repeatedly press LEFT ARROW REVIEW within 6 seconds to decrease the contrast or REVIEW RIGHT ARROW to increase the contrast. Note: If you hold down DELETE for longer than 6 seconds without pressing a REVIEW button, the system deletes all calls from its memory. 3. Release DELETE. RECEIVING AND STORING CALLS The module automatically receives and displays all caller ID information for every incoming call. As it receives calls, it stores the information in the module's memory for later recall. OUT OF AREA CALLS If the caller is calling from outside the caller ID service area, OUT OF AREA appears on the display. ANONYMOUS CALL If the caller has elected to block caller ID information, ANONYMOUS CALL appears on the display for about 30 seconds, and the message alert indicator flashes after the second ring. NEW CALL If there is a new call in the system since you last reviewed caller information, the message received indicator flashes rapidly. Press DELETE to turn off the indicator. MESSAGE WAITING If you subscribe to your phone company's voice mail feature and they send a signal to your caller ID system when you have new voice mail, MESSAGE WAITING appears for 30 seconds when you get new voice mail. The message received indicator also flashes slowly until you retrieve your voice mail messages. Note: You must use an optional AC adapter for this feature to work. See "Connecting an Optional AC Adapter." LINE ERROR If there is an error in the Caller ID transmission, LINE ERROR appears on the display. Note: Minor electrical disturbances can affect the caller ID information. Occasional errors are normal. If the module frequently displays LINE ERROR, contact your local Radio Shack store for assistance. REVIEWING AND DELETING CALL INFORMATION You can review and delete call information for up to 85 calls. To view the latest call information, press either LEFT ARROW REVIEW or REVIEW RIGHT ARROW when the display is blank. Then, to view other call information displays, press LEFT ARROW REVIEW to step back through the calls or REVIEW RIGHT ARROW to step forward through them. Note: The display shows up to 10 digits of the phone number. If the incoming phone number is longer than 10 digits, the display shows only the last 10 digits. To delete the displayed call, quickly press DELETE twice. To delete all calls, press and hold down DELETE for about 6 seconds. The module displays NO CALLS. AUTOMATIC POWER OFF The display automatically turns off about 30 seconds after your last button press. However, the message received indicator flashes or lights steadily to indicate the status of new calls. The indicator flashes slowly if you have a new voice mail. It flashes quickly if you do not have voice mail but have new caller ID information. (br/all-7/7/94)
