TAD-550 (430-0714) Installation and Preparation Faxback Doc. # 7141 CHOOSING A LOCATION Select a location where the wires are not in the way of normal activities. Be sure it is near both a telephone jack and a standard AC outlet. LOADING CASSETTES The TAD comes with two cassettes - the SFC-1 (for the outgoing announcement with 30 seconds recording per side) and the SFC-60 (for incoming messages with 30 minutes recording per side). Your local Radio Shack store has replacement cassettes of varying lengths. Follow these steps to load both cassettes. 1. Turn the cassettes' hubs with a pencil to take up any tape slack. Note: Remove the stopper bracket from each cassette before you load them the first time. 2. Lift the cassette compartment door. Note: Remove the plastic tab from the tape mechanism before you load the cassettes the first time. 3. With the full reels to the left, load the SFC-1 cassette in the left OUTGOING compartment and the SFC-60 cassette in the right INCOMING compartment. 4. Close the cassette compartment door. Notes: Do not use the SFC-1 cassette in the INCOMING compartment. It is not long enough for more than one message. Replace both cassettes at least once a year, or more often if you use them heavily. CONNECTING TO THE TELEPHONE LINE The TAD comes with an attached telephone cord that ends in a modular plug. To connect the TAD to the telephone line, plug the modular plug into a standard modular telephone jack. Note: If you want to connect the TAD and a phone to the same line, use a duplex adapter (Radio Shack Cat. No. 279-357). If you do not have a modular jack, you can: Update the wiring yourself, using jacks and adapters available at your local Radio Shack store. Have the phone company update the wiring for you. The phone company will charge you for the installation of the necessary jacks. They might ask you for the USOC number of the jack to be installed. This number is RJ11C. CONNECTING TO POWER The supplied AC adapter powers the TAD. Caution: To protect the TAD and the adapter, you must use a Class II, 120V AC/9V DC adapter, such as the supplied adapter. It must deliver at least 400 milliamps (but no more than 450 milliamps), its center tip must be set to negative, and its plug must correctly fit the TAD's DC 9V jack. Insert the adapter's small plug into the DC 9V jack on the back of the TAD. Then plug the AC adapter's other end into a standard AC outlet. The TAD says, "Set time, date, and remote code." Route the AC adapter's cord through the strain-relief slot on the back of the TAD to prevent the cord from being accidentally unplugged. INSTALLING/REPLACING THE BACKUP BATTERY During an AC power failure, a 9-volt battery (Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-553, not supplied) provides backup power so the TAD can maintain the correct time and memory information. However, the TAD cannot answer incoming calls without AC power. The BATTERY LOW indicator lights to let you know when to replace the battery. Follow these steps to install the battery. 1. Be sure the AC adapter's cord is plugged in. 2. Remove the battery compartment cover (located on the bottom of the TAD) by pressing the cover's tab in the direction of the arrow and lifting off the cover. 3. Snap the battery's terminals to the connector inside the compartment. 4. Replace the cover. 5. Press ERASE/REWIND inside the cassette compartment to turn off the BATTERY LOW indicator. SETTING THE TIME AND DATE, AND THE REMOTE AND CALL SCREEN PLUS CODES Follow these steps to set the time and date for the TAD's clock and the remote operation and Call Screen Plus codes. Notes: If you wait more than 30 seconds to press a button during this procedure or press STOP/TIME, the TAD stops and stores the entries up to that point. Repeat the procedure from Step 1 to set any remaining information. During the setup procedure, you can skip over any item you do not want to change by repeatedly pressing SET. 1. Press SET on the left side of the TAD two times. SET flashes on the display, and the TAD says, "Time of day-set hour." 2. Press FAST-F or REWIND until the TAD says the correct hour for the clock. Be sure to set AM or PM correctly. 3. Then press SET. 4. Repeat Steps 1 through 3 to set the minutes, month, date, day, three- digit remote code, and three-digit Call Screen Plus code. The TAD prompts you for each item. After you set the third digit of the Call Screen Plus code, the TAD announces the code and stops. Notes: The Call Screen Plus code must be different from the remote code. If you try to change the Call Screen Plus Code to match the remote code (or Vice versa), the TAD reverts to/displays the last entered code and says, "Error. Set Call Screen Plus code-first digit, " or "Error. Set remote code, first digit." Enter a different code. If you press STOP/TIME immediately after you set the first or second digit of the remote or Call Screen Plus code, the TAD loses the changes to the code. You can press and hold REWIND or FAST-F as you set the time, date, day, and remote codes to quickly scroll through the options. If you exit the setup procedure without setting the codes, the TAD uses the previous codes. The factory-set remote code is 111; the factory-set Call Screen Plus code is 999. CHECKING THE TIME/DAY/DATE To check the time/day/date at any time (except during programming), press STOP/TIME. The TAD announces the current time, day date, and the number of calls and messages. (If there are no messages, the TAD says, "No calls, no messages.") RECORDING THE OUTGOING ANNOUNCEMENT Before you record the outgoing announcement, we suggest you write down and practice speaking it. Ask for the caller's name, phone number, and message. The maximum message length is 30 seconds. Safety Hint: Do not tell callers that you are not home. Instead, say that you cannot come to the phone right now. You can also set the TAD to make an announcement only, without recording messages. This is useful for announcing information about an upcoming event. Be sure the announcement makes it clear that the caller cannot leave a message. Follow these steps to record your outgoing announcement. 1. Press ANNOUNCE RECORD (located under the cassette compartment door). The TAD says "Record announcement," ANNOUNCE flashes on the display, and the TAD beeps. 2. After the beep, speak in a normal voice from about 12 inches in front of the microphone (located on the front of the TAD). As you record, the display shows the number of elapsed seconds. 3. When you finish speaking, press STOP/TIME. The total length of your outgoing message flashes on the display, the tape rewinds, then the display returns to the time display. Notes: If the tape ends before you press STOP/TIME four beeps sound, the TAD says, "Error. Announcement tape," and EEEE flashes on the display. If you didn't finish your message, press STOP/TIME. Shorten your message so it is under 30 seconds and begin again at Step 1. Make sure your outgoing message is no longer than 30 seconds. If there is a pause of 2 seconds or more in the announcement, the TAD stops at the pause during playback and rewinds the tape. If this happens, re-record the announcement without the pause. CHECKING THE OUTGOING ANNOUNCEMENT To hear the announcement, press ANNOUNCE TEST inside the tape compartment. Adjust the volume as desired. Note: If you set the TAD to answer calls with no outgoing message tape installed, the TAD says, "Error. No announcement tape." SETTING THE ANSWER SWITCH The ANSWER switch on the right side of the TAD controls how long the TAD waits before it answers a call. IMM (Immediate Answer) - The TAD answers on the first or second ring. DEL (Delayed Answer) - The TAD answers after about four rings. TOL S (Toll Saver) - If there are no messages, the TAD answers after about four rings. Otherwise, the TAD answers after about two rings. This gives you time to hang up before the TAD answers so you can avoid unnecessary charges if you call by long distance. SETTING THE INCOMING MESSAGE SWITCH The INCOMING MESSAGE switch on the right side of the TAD determines the maximum length of the message a caller can leave. 30 SEC - limits each incoming message to 30 seconds. 3 MIN - limits each incoming message to 3 minutes. Note: This setting sets only the length of the incoming message. You can still record memos and conversations with either setting that are only limited to the length of the message tape.
