Vehicle Alarm System (490-0722) Operation Faxback Doc. # 7205 Your alarm system detects unauthorized entry into your vehicle three ways. The shock sensor sets off the alarm if it detects movement. The current sensor sets off the alarm if someone opens the trunk, hood, or any other doors that turn on a dome or utility light. The spin switch wire sets off the alarm if someone opens the driver-side door. When violated, your system sounds an alarm for 90 seconds, then resets and is ready for the next violation. You can silence the alarm when it is sounding by pressing DISARM on the remote control transmitter. Several of the system's features let you control how it works. For example, you can control the motion sensor's sensitivity. You can disarm the system so the siren does not sound. You can even turn off the alarm system so it does not automatically arm. TURNING THE SYSTEM ON AND OFF The system is normally on, so it automatically arms 1 minute after you turn off the vehicle's engine and exit the vehicle. However, you might not want the system to arm for valet parking or car repair. Note: If you did not connect the white wire to the driver-side door pin switch, the alarm does not automatically arm even if you set it to do so. To turn off the system, first disarm it by pressing DISARM on the remote transmitter once. Then press DISARM three times within 3 seconds. The system chirps twice after the first two times and three times after the third. You can still remote arm the system. To turn on the system, first disarm it by pressing DISARM on the remote transmitter once. Then press ARM three times within 3 seconds. The system chirps once after the first two times and three times after the third. To turn off the paging transmitter, set its switch to OFF. ARMING THE SYSTEM Arming the system sets the alarm to sound. Before you arm the system, be sure it is turned on. Automatic Arming If you do nothing after you turn off the ignition and exit the vehicle, the alarm chirps in 1 minute, indicating it is armed. If you open a door before 1 minute has elapsed, the alarm's timer starts a new 1-minute countdown. Each door you open after that restarts the countdown. One minute after the last door is closed, the alarm system chirps to confirm it is armed. The indicator flashes. When you return to your vehicle, use the remote control to disarm the alarm system before entering the vehicle. Remote Arming To arm the system from outside the vehicle, press ARM on the transmitter. The red status indicator lights and the siren chirps once. After a few seconds, the indicator begins to flash. The transmitter has a range of up to 50 feet (See "Remote Control Range"). DISARMING THE SYSTEM Press DISARM on the remote transmitter once. The siren chirps twice and the indicator turns off the indicate that the system is disarmed. Any time the alarm sounds, you can turn it off by disarming it. The system also has intrusion memory. If your siren sounded while you were away, when you return and disarm it, it sounds four chirps to let you know the alarm was triggered. SETTING THE MOTION SENSOR'S SENSITIVITY The control module has a sensor that responds to shock or sudden vehicle movement. For example, if someone breaks the glass or hits your car with a stick, rock, or hammer, the siren sounds. You can adjust this sensor's sensitivity according to your needs, from very sensitive (so even a slight movement or impact triggers the siren) to very insensitive (so a lot of movement or impact is required to trigger the siren). Follow these steps to adjust the sensitivity. 1. Disarm the alarm system. 2. With your fingers or a screwdriver, carefully remove and save the rubber plug on the back of the main control module. 3. Using a screwdriver, turn the screw slowly and gently, taking care not to force it too far in either direction. Turn the screw counterclock- wise (toward MIN) to decrease the sensor's sensitivity, clockwise (toward MAX) to increase it. 4. Arm the system and wait 3 seconds. (See "Arming the System.") Then test the setting by pushing hard on your bumper or closing the door to jolt the car until you are satisfied with the sensitivity level. 5. Replace the rubber plug. Note: Failure to replace the plug voids the alarm's warranty. SOUNDING THE PANIC ALARM This feature lets you summon help in case of an emergency. To sound the panic alarm, press and hold ARM or DISARM on the remote transmitter for 2 seconds. Note: Sounding the alarm does not necessary deter intruders. Seek help as quickly as possible. If you are away from your car, stay in a safe place until you are sure there is no danger. THE SYSTEM STATUS INDICATOR The red indicator flashes when the system is armed. It lights steadily during the 3-second arming delay period. It flashes rapidly if the alarm has sounded. REMOTE CONTROL RANGE Because each installation and vehicle type is different, your remote control's range varies at different locations around the vehicle. Test your remote control by alternately arming and disarming the system at different distances from the vehicle and from all sides. Know your alarm system's capabilities. When the remote control's battery becomes weak, the control range decreases. Replace your remote control's battery (see "Replacing the Remote Arm/Disarm Transmitter's Battery"). REPLACING THE FUSE If the alarm stops working, follow these steps to see if the fuse has blown. 1. Disconnect your vehicle's negative battery cable. 2. Hold the fuse holder by both ends. 3. Push the fuse holder ends together, then turn and release either end. The fuse holder opens. 4. If the fuse has blown, replace it with a 5-amp fuse of the same type and rating (Cat. No. 270-1007). 5. Hold the fuse holder by both ends. 6. Push the fuse holder ends together, then turn either end. The fuse holder closes. 7. Reconnect your vehicle's negative battery cable. Then follow the steps under "Setting Security Codes" to set your system to use your remote keychain transmitters. REPLACING THE REMOTE ARM/DISARM TRANSMITTER'S BATTERY The remote arm/disarm transmitter requires a 12-volt type 23A alkaline battery, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-144. Replace the battery if the indicator fails to light when you press either ARM or DISARM, or if the transmitter's range is reduced. 1. Remove the screw from the back of the transmitter and lift off the case. 2. Remove the old battery and discard it immediately. Warning: Never allow children to play with batteries. Swallowing a battery could be fatal. 3. Insert a new battery as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked inside the battery compartment. 4. Replace the case and secure it using the screw.
