Video Stabilizer (150-1270) Operation Faxback Doc. # 7254 Adjusting the VES Controls The controls on the Video Enhancer/Stabilizer interact with each other and with the controls on your TV, VCR, and other video equipment. 1. Set all the VES control knobs and switches as described in "Preparation for Use." 2. Turn on the TV and set it to the same channel as the CHANNEL switch on the VES. 3. Set SOURCE A/B switch for the desired input source and begin playback from the selected input source (VCR or video disc player). 4. If the picture is shaky, turn the LOCK control clockwise until the picture becomes steady. Note: Do not turn the LOCK control farther than is necessary to make the picture steady. 5. If the volume is too loud, with the normal setting of the TV volume control, turn the AUDIO LEVEL control counterclockwise to achieve the desired volume level. 6. Turn the ENHANCE control clockwise or counterclockwise to produce the sharpest clearest picture on the left side of the screen; the screen will be divided by the "wiper" line (if the DELAY control is at 12 o'clock). 7. Turn the VNR Control clockwise or counterclockwise to achieve the best picture with the least amount of video noise (("snow" or graininess in the picture) on the left side of the screen. 8. Turn the DELAY control fully clockwise to enhance the entire screen. After following the above steps, you might want to make minor adjustments to the color controls on the TV (or to the controls on the color processor or audio processor, if you have these). Note: Different tapes will require different settings of the VES controls. The uses and possible connections with this unit are practically endless. And as you add more equipment, such as color processors or audio processors, the numbers increase. Monitoring a Recorded Program This is the simplest and most common use for the VES. It requires only one input source (VCR or video disc player) and a TV. Use the drawing at right as a guide to connections for this basic VES function. Procedure 1. Make the connections. 2. Turn on all equipment in the video system. 3. Make all recommended adjustments and settings. Remember, you will probably have to readjust the controls when you change tapes, unless both tapes were recorded on the same VCR and at the same speed. The audio and video signals on the tape are not altered when the VES is used in this manner. The signals are improved after they leave the VCR. Recording from a Source VCR (or Video Disc Player) to One Other VCR This procedure requires two VCRs (or one VCR and one video disc player) plus a TV for monitoring. Use the drawing at right as a guide to making the necessary connections. Procedure 1. Make the connections as shown at right. 2. Turn on all equipment in the video system. 3. Make all adjustments and settings. 4. Begin playback on the source VCR, and record a short "test" segment of the program on the recording VCR. 5. Reverse the setting of the A/B switch, set the DELAY control to DEFEAT (counterclockwise until it "clicks"), and play back the test recording. 6. If the picture does not contain the desired amount of enhancement, make the necessary fine-tuning adjustments of the VES controls. 7. Return the A/B switch to its original setting and set the DELAY control fully clockwise (to ENHANCE). Note: VCRs do not record the signal exactly as you see it on the screen. The "test" recording is absolutely necessary for getting the desired results. In some cases, you might want to make more than one test recording (repeat steps 4-7). 8. Rewind both VCR tapes to the beginning. 9. Set the FADE switch to OUT. 10. Activate the record mode on the recording VCR; then start playback on the source VCR. 11. Move the FADE switch to IN. 12. When the recording is complete, move the FADE switch back to OUT. 13. Press the stop buttons on both VCRs and rewind the tapes. 14. Return the FADE switch to IN, reverse the A/B switch setting, and move the DELAY control to DEFEAT; then check the newly recorded tape. Notes: Steps, 9, 11, and 12 (use of the FADE switch) are optional. Do not over-enhance a tape. The VES can add more enhancement later, but it cannot remove enhancement. Recording from a Source VCR (or Video Disc Player) to two Other VCRs This procedure requires three VCRs (or two VCRs and one video disc player) plus a TV for monitoring. Use the drawing at right as a guide to making the necessary connections. Procedure 1. Make the connections as shown at right. 2. Turn on all equipment in the video system. 3. Make all adjustments and settings. 4. Begin playback on the source VCR, and record a short "test" segment on recording VCR #1. If you are using two similar machines (both machines are VHS or BETA) and both are recording at the same speed, test recording on only one VCR is usually sufficient. 5. Reverse the setting of the A/B switch, set the DELAY control to DEFEAT (counterclockwise until it "clicks"). and play back the test recording. Therefore, the "test" recording is absolutely necessary for getting the desired results. In some cases, you might want to make more than one test recording (repeat steps 4-7). 8. Rewind all three VCR tapes to the beginning. 9. Set the FADE switch to OUT. 10. Activate the record mode on both recording VCRs; then start playback on the source VCR. 11. Move the FADE switch to IN. 12. When the recording is complete, move the FADE switch back to OUT. 13. Press the stop buttons on all VCRs and rewind the tapes. 14. Return the FADE switch to IN, reverse the A/B switch setting, and move the DELAY control to DEFEAT; then check the newly recorded tapes. Notes: With the above connections, you must use either the source VCR (A input) or recording VCR #1 (B input) for playback. Steps 9, 11, and 12 (FADE switch) are optional. Recording from A-to-B or B-to-A The connection drawing below allows you to record from either VCR to the other VCR. The setting of the A/B switch will determine which VCR is the source unit and which VCR is the recording unit. The procedure for recording is the same as in "Recording from a Source VCR (or Video Disc Player) to One Other VCR". Note: When playing back a tape that was enhanced during recording, set the DELAY control to DEFEAT (counterclockwise until it "clicks") to see what is actually recorded on the tape. Connecting the VES and Other Input Sources to the TV If you want to use the TV as a monitor for the VES system and still have easy access to other input sources, such as cable TV or a TV antenna, you must use a video A/B switch or video selector (available from Radio Shack). Using Video Cameras with the VES You may use a video camera in place of the source VCR in any of the suggested connections. This will allow you to enhance the picture as the original recording is being made. You must use RCA-type phono connectors for the inputs to the VES. A camera AC power supply that provides power for the camera and has the necessary RCA-type audio and video outputs will be needed. (br-7/6/94)
