Corless Soldering Gun (640-2194) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 7264 CHARGING THE BATTERIES The soldering gun is shipped with the batteries fully discharged. Follow these steps to charge the batteries before operating the gun. Note: Nickel-cadmium batteries last longer between charges if you occasionally let them completely discharge. Also, to ensure a full charge, be sure the batteries are at room temperature when you charge them. 1. Stand the gun on its end and insert the charger's plug into the jack on the handle's base. 2. Plug the charger into a standard AC outlet. The batteries fully charge in about 14 hours. Cautions: Read all cautionary markings on the charger. Be sure you connect the charger to the soldering gun before plugging it into the AC outlet, and disconnect the charger from the AC outlet before disconnecting it from the soldering gun. Otherwise, the unconnected plug might touch some metal and damage the charger. Do not abuse the power cord. Always grasp the cord by its plug to remove it from the outlet. Do not carry or swing the charger by the cord. Do not operate the charger with a damaged cord or plug. Immediately replace damaged parts. Do not expose the charger to rain or moisture. To avoid a serious shock hazard, do not disassemble the charger. If the charger is not operating correctly, take it to your local Radio Shack store for assistance. Use only the supplied charger. Do not charge the soldering gun in temperatures below 32 degrees F. Exposure to extreme cold can reduce the batteries' charging capacity. Do not charge the soldering gun in temperatures above 104 degrees F. Exposure to extremely high temperatures can permanently damage nickel-cadmium batteries. TINNING THE SOLDERING TIP You need to apply a thin coating of solder to each soldering tip before you use it. Follow these instructions to properly tin the soldering tip. 1. Press and hold the trigger for about 20 seconds. 2. Apply solder to the tip. Keep the tip in contact with the solder until the tip is evenly coated (3 to 4 seconds). 3. Release the trigger and wipe the excess solder on a damp sponge. 4. If the tip is not thoroughly tinned, repeat steps 1 through 3. CHANGING THE TIP The soldering gun is equipped with a fine soldering tip, which is especially suited for electronics and minor repair work. If you want to use the gun for other applications, you will need to change the soldering tip. Contact your local Radio Shack for replacement tips. Follow these instructions to change the soldering tip. 1. Loosen the two tip-fastening screws on the side of the gun near the nozzle opening. 2. Pull out the tip. 3. Insert the new tip into the nozzle opening until it is fully seated. 4. Tighten the tip-fastening screws. USING THE TRIGGER LOCK Lock the trigger when you are not using the gun. (br/all-8/10/94)
