ET-501 (430-0805) Installation Faxback Doc. # 7271 Note: Before connecting the Trimfone telephone, you must notify your local telephone company of the telephone's registration number and ringer equivalence number. These numbers are located on the bottom of the telephone. DESK PHONE INSTALLATION Plug one end of the supplied modular cord into the jack on the back of the telephone. Then, plug the other end into your telephone lines modular telephone jack. If your telephone line does not have a modular jack, you can: Update the wiring yourself. Your local Radio Shack store sells jacks and adapters necessary to convert older wiring to modular wiring. Have your local telephone company update your telephone wiring for you. Notes: The telephone company has the right to charge you for installing a modular jack. The telephone company will ask for the USOC number of the jack. This number is RJ-11C for a line jack or RJ-11W for a wall jack. WALL-MOUNTING THE TELEPHONE You can mount the telephone in a convenient wall location. Mount the telephone on a standard wall plate or directly on the wall, using two screws with heads that fit into the keyhole slots on the back of the telephone. You can get a telephone wall-plate and the short modular cord useful for wall-mounting at your local Radio Shack store. To Mount the Telephone on a Standard Wall Plate: 1. Plug one end of the short cord (not supplied into the jack on the back of the telephone. Route the cord through the groove on the bottom of the telephone. Route any excess cord to the recess on the back of the telephone. 2. Plug the other end of the modular cord into the jack on the wall plate. 3. Align the wall plate's two studs with the keyhole slots on the bottom of the telephone. Slide the telephone down onto the two studs to secure the telephone to the wall. 4. Lift and rotate the handset holder as shown, so that it holds the handset in place. To Mount the Telephone Directly on a Wall: 1: Drill two holes 3 15/16 inches (100 mm) apart. 2. Thread a screw (not supplied) into each hole, letting the heads extend 3/16" (5mm). (2 wall mount screws are not included.) 3. Plug one end of the long modular telephone cable into the jack (nearest the RINGER ON/OFF switch) on the back of the telephone. Route the long cord up through the groove in the back of the phone's base so that the base can fit flush against the wall. Then, plug the cord's other end into your telephone line jack. 4. Lift and rotate the handset holder, so that it can hold the handset into place. 5. Align the two keyhole slots on the bottom of the telephone with the two screw-heads and slide the telephone down onto the screwheads to secure it in place. CONNECTING THE HANDSET CORD Plug one end of the shorter, coiled modular cord into the second jack on the back of the telephone. Then plug the cord's other end into the jack on the telephone's handset. Hang the handset on the handset holder. SETTING THE RINGER SWITCH The telephone has a RINGER ON/OFF switch. With this switch in the OFF position, the telephone does not ring, but you can still make outgoing calls. If you have an extension phone that rings, you can answer incoming calls. SETTING THE DIALING MODE Set the TONE/PULSE switch above the telephone's keypad for the type of service (tone or pulse) available from your local telephone company. If you are not sure which type of service you have, you can do this simple test. 1. Set the TONE/PULSE switch to TONE. 2. Lift the handset and listen for a dial tone. 3. Press any number other than 0. If the dial tone stops, you have touch-tone service. If the dial tone continues, you have pulse service. 4. If you have pulse service, set the TONE/PULSE switch to PULSE. (br/all-8/3/94)
