ET-209 (430-0617A) Installation Faxback Doc. # 7276 INSTALLING/REPLACING THE BATTERIES The telephone requires two AAA batteries to protect the numbers you store in memory. We recommend alkaline batteries (Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-555) for the best performance. NOTE: If there are numbers in memory when you replace the batteries, be sure the AC adapter is plugged in and you have fresh batteries ready to install before you remove the old batteries. The memory can hold numbers for a short time without power, but if it goes without power for too long, it might lose all the stored numbers. 1. Remove the screw on the battery compartment using a Phillips head screwdriver and open the compartment. 2. Remove any old batteries and install two fresh AAA batteries as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked in the battery compartment. CAUTION: Incorrect battery installation might damage the telephone. 3. Close the battery compartment cover and secure the screw. CHECKING THE BATTERY CONDITION Set NORM/STORE BATT TEST to STORE BATT TEST. If the BATTERY TEST indicator does not light or only dimly lights, replace the batteries. See "Installing/Replacing the Batteries." After you check the battery, set NORM/STORE BATT TEST back to NORM. SELECTING A LOCATION Select a location for your telephone that is near an AC outlet, a telephone jack, and where the wires are out of the way of normal activities. CONNECTING THE AC ADAPTER CAUTION: Use only the supplied adapter with your telephone. Using another type of adapter might damage the telephone. To prevent damaging the telephone or adapter, plug the adapter into the telephone before you plug the adapter into an AC outlet. 1. Insert the supplied AC adapter's barrel plug into the telephone's DC 9V jack. 2. Plug the AC adapter's other end into an AC outlet. 3. Route the AC adapter's cable through the strain-relief slot. CONNECTING TO THE TELEPHONE LINES To use the ET-209 as described in this manual, you must have two phone lines (two different phone numbers) installed in your home or office. These phone lines can be connected to two separate single-line jacks (RJ 11s) or a single tow-line jack (RJ 14). If you have only one phone line, order an additional line from your local phone company. To connect the ET-209 to two single-line jacks, use a two-line coupler (available at your local Radio Shack store) between the phone and the jacks. To connect the ET-209 to a two-line jack, simply insert the modular plug into the jack. NOTES: The intercom uses the wiring of Line 1 to operate. Be sure you wire Line 1 to the same phone number for all stations. If only one line works on the ET-209, you have plugged the phone into a single-line jack. If either of your phone lines does not use a modular jack, you can buy the necessary adapters or jacks at your local Radio Shack store, or you can have the phone company update the wiring for you. The telephone company will charge you if they update the wiring. CONNECTING THE HANDSET CORD Plug one end of the supplied coiled handset cord into the jack on the telephone's handset. Then, plug the cord's other end into the jack on the left side of the telephone's base. Radio Shack stores sell longer coiled handset cords that are especially useful if you mount the telephone on a wall. MOUNTING YOUR TELEPHONE ON A WALL You can mount your telephone on a standard telephone wall plate or directly on the wall using two screws that fit into the key-hole slots on the back of the telephone. You can get a telephone wall plate and short modular cord for a wall-plate mounting at your local Radio Shack store. If you mount your telephone on the wall, follow these instructions: 1. Move the mounting bracket from its storage location the wall-mount socket. a) Lift the bracket. b) Insert the bracket into the wall-mount socket and push the bracket upward to latch it. 2. To prevent the handset from falling off the wall-mounted telephone, pull out the handset guide and rotate it one half-turn. There is also a handset holder above the regular handset hook that lets you temporarily rest the handset without disconnecting the call. 3. a) If you mount the telephone directly on the wall, drill two holes 3 15/16 inches vertically apart at the desired location. Then, thread the screws into the wall, allowing the heads to extend about 1/8 inch. b) If you mount the telephone on a standard telephone wall plate, plug one end of a short modular cord (not included) into a wall plate jack and the other end into the telephone jack as shown. 4. Place the telephone's two key-hole slots over the two screws and press down the telephone to secure it. (all-8/8/94)
