Caller ID System 40 (430-0961) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 7367 INSTALLING/REPLACING THE BATTERIES The system uses four AAA batteries for power. For the longest operation, we recommend you use alkaline batteries (Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-555). Note: When appears on the display or the display dims, replace the batteries. 1. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw from the battery compartment door, then slide off the cover. 2. Remove and discard any old batteries. Caution: Always remove old or weak batteries. Batteries can leak chemicals which can damage electronic circuits. 3. Place four fresh batteries in the compartment as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked inside the compartment. 4. Replace the battery compartment cover and secure it with the screw. Battery Test The system automatically tests the batteries when it receives each new call. If the batteries are weak, +/- appears on the display. MOUNTING THE SYSTEM You can place the system directly on a desk, table, or shelf using the stand to tilt the system for viewing. Or, you can follow these steps to mount the system on a wall. 1. Drill two holes 2 3/8 inches apart into the wall. Thread two screws (not supplied) into the wall. The screws should extend about 1/8-inch (about the width of two stacked pennies) from the wall. 2. Press the two latches to remove the detachable stand. 3. Align the keyholes on the back of the system with the two screws and slide the system down to secure it to the wall. CONNECTING TO THE PHONE LINE The Caller ID system connects to a modular wall jack and your telephone. If your telephone wiring does not have a modular wall jack, you can update the wiring yourself. Radio Shack stores sell the necessary jacks and adapters to convert older wiring methods to modular wiring. Or, you can have the telephone company update your telephone wiring for you. Notes: The telephone company charges to install the necessary jacks. The telephone company might ask you for the USOC number of the jacks to be installed. This number is RJ11C for a baseboard jack, or RJ11W for a wall jack. 1. Unplug the telephone line cord from your telephone and plug it into the system's TEL LINE jack. 2. Plug one end of the supplied line cord into the system's PHONE jack. 3. Plug the other end of the supplied line cord into the telephone. RESETTING THE SYSTEM Before you use the system the first time, or to clear information from the system at any time, use a pointed object, such as a straightened paper clip, to press RESET on the back of the system. The display shows 12--00 AM. Notes: The current displayed time normally shows a flashing dash (--) instead of a colon between the hour and minute digits. Immediately after resetting the Caller ID system, the displayed time will be incorrect until you receive the first call (the system automatically sets the correct time each time you receive a call). Immediately after resetting the caller ID system, if you press READ, NO CALL appears on the display. (br/all-8/12/94)
