System 411 (430-0456A) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 7410 SETTING THE DIALING MODE Set TONE/PULSE MODE to the type of service you have. If you are not sure which type of service you have, do this simple test. 1. Set TONE/PULSE MODE to TONE. 2. Lift the handset, press LINE 1, and listen for a dial tone. 3. Press any number other than 0. If the dial tone stops, you have touch-tone service. If the dial tone continues, you have pulse service. 4. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for each line you have connected. 5. If you have tone dialing for all of the lines, leave TONE/PULSE MODE set to TONE. If you have pulse service on any line, set it to PULSE. SETTING THE LINE MODE SWITCHES There are four 3-position LINE MODE switches on the right side of your telephone. Each switch turns the ringer and line-status indicators on or off for the corresponding line (LINE 1-LINE 4). The A/B/C setting for each switch have the following effects: A-Turns off both the line's incoming ringer and the line-status indicator. You can still make and answer calls if you hear an extension phone. If you have not connected one of the lines, set its LINE MODE switch to A. If you have connected the line, set the switch to A only if you do not intend to use that line from that particular station. B-Turns off the incoming ringer of the line. You can still use the line and the line indicator works normally so you can check the line-status. If you have connected the telephone to the line but want the telephone for the primary use of another extension, set its LINE MODE switch to B. This turns off the ringer for the line. You can still check the line condition with the line-status indicator, and you can answer or place a call. C-The incoming ringer and the line-status indicator work normally. To use the line normally, set LINE MODE to C. SETTING THE RINGER SWITCH The LO/HI RINGER switch controls the incoming ringer volume for lines with their LINE MODE switch set to C. Set LO/HI RINGER to the desired ringer volume level as follows. LO-Produces a quieter tone for use in a location where the phone might disturb someone else. HI-Produces a sound about as loud as a regular telephone. This is the normal position. Note: The ringer sound mutes to a lower volume if a line rings while you are using another line. SETTING THE RF CARRIER SWITCH The telephone system uses one of the telephone lines to carry the intercom and operational data signals. The LINE 1/LINE 3 RF CARRIER switch on the back of the telephone lets you select which line carries this signal. Under normal conditions, set the LINE 1/LINE 3 RF CARRIER switch to LINE 1. This selects LINE 1 to carry the intercom signal. If you experience any problem with this setting, such as noise on the line, set the switch to LINE 3. Be sure to select a line you have connected to an active telephone line to carry the intercom signal. If you select a line that is not connected to a telephone line, you cannot use the intercom function. You must set all of the telephone's RF CARRIER switches to the same position, and you must connect the same telephone number to each line at every station. CHECKING AND ADJUSTING THE LINE-STATUS INDICATORS You can check the status of each line by glancing at the line-status indicators. Each indicator shows the condition of the corresponding line as shown in the chart. Line-Status Indicator Line-Status Not lighted Not in use Lighted In use Blinking rapidly Ringing Blinking slowly On hold Use the following procedure to check if all the line-status indicators show the line-status properly. 1. Be sure the TONE/PULSE MODE switch is set to the correct position. 2. Set all LINE MODE switches to B or C for active lines. 3. Lift the handset and press the LINE button for the line you want to check. 4. Place a call to a one-way service, such as time or temperature. 5. Place the call on hold by pressing HOLD. If the line-status indicator blinks slowly, it indicates the proper line-status. However, if the indicator lights steadily or does not light, adjust the corresponding LINE ADJUST control on the bottom of the telephone using the supplied screwdriver (located under wall mount bracket) so the indicator blinks slowly and steadily. Repeat Steps 3-5 for all the line-status indicators. After you finish making the necessary adjustments, put the screwdriver back in the wall-mount bracket in case you need to make adjustments in the future. CONFIRMING THE LINE NUMBERS After completing power and telephone line connections, confirm which of the four telephone numbers is accessed by the Line 1, 2, 3 and 4 buttons on the telephone. 1. Lift the handset and press LINE 1. 2. Try to place a call to each of your four telephone numbers. If one of the line-status indicators other than LINE 1 blinks rapidly, the number you dialed is connected to that line. If you hear a busy signal, the number is connected to Line 1. After you identify each line, enter the phone numbers on the telephone numbers on the telephone number plate. Use a paper clip or other pointed object to lift the plastic cover off the telephone number plate. Write the telephone number for each line in the space provided. Use a pencil, in case a number changes. Replace the cover. Note: If you have a special telephone service such as roll-over or hunt, incoming calls for a busy line automatically switch to the next available line. (LB/all-08/23/94)
