Your fax machine can retain numbers in memory for about 5 minutes without telephone line power. If the fax machine is without telephone line power for too long, it loses the numbers in memory. CHAIN-DIALING MEMORY NUMBERS When you use special tone services, such as alternate long-distance or bank-by-phone, you must dial the service's telephone number and wait for the service's computer to answer before you continue. The length of time before the computer answers can vary, so we recommend you not use a pre- programmed pause after the service's number. However, you can store the service's number in one memory location, your security code in a second location, and the remaining numbers in a third location. Follow these steps to chain-dial memory numbers. 1. Memory dial the service's number. 2. Wait for the computer tone. 3. Manually dial or memory-dial your security code. Note: To prevent unauthorized access to your account, we recommend that you not write down your security code on the directory label. 4. Memory-dial the remaining numbers, such as the area code and long- distance number. Note: If you use pulse dialing, be sure you set [PULSE/TONE] to TONE when you store numbers that you need to tone dial for a special service. Using the [*] and [#] Keys ---------------------------------------------------- The [*] and [#] keys are used in the tone mode for certain special telephone services. Check with your local telephone company or a special telephone service, such as bank-by-phone, for the functions of these keys. Note: Thes keys have no function in the pulse mode.
