7-Band Equalizer/Booster (120-1969) Installation Faxback Doc. # 7548 Before you install the equalizer/booster, carefully read all installation instructions. If you are unsure about any part of the installation process, we recommend that you have a professional install your equalizer/ booster. Note the following before you begin installing the equalizer/booster: Be sure your vehicle has a 12-volt DC, negative-ground electrical system. If you connect front and rear speakers to the equalizer/booster, each speaker must have an impedance of 8 ohms or more. If you connect only one pair of speakers, each speaker must have an impedance of 4 ohms or more and you must connect the speakers to the front speaker harness. Before you mount the equalizer/booster, temporarily connect the equalizer/booster as described in "Connecting the Equalizer/Booster." Do not mount the equalizer/booster until you are sure the connections work. If your car has four speakers, you need to purchase a rear speaker harness. Radio Shack stores sell adapter harness for many vehicles. SUPPLIED HARDWARE The following items are supplied with the equalizer/booster. Be sure you locate these items before you throw away the packing materials. Left-Bracket (1) Machine Screws (4) Small Flat Washers (4) Large Flat Washers (4) Right-Bracket (1) Small Lock Washers (4) Sheet Metal Screws (4) Large Lock Washers (4) 10-Amp Fuse CHOOSING A MOUNTING LOCATION Choose a mounting location that: Is as close as possible to your vehicle's radio/cassette player or other main auto-sound component Does not interfere with the vehicle's operation If not directly in front of a heating vent Lets you drill mounting holes without damaging other vehicle components Allows enough leg room for passengers Lets you conveniently and safely route wires CONNECTING THE EQUALIZER/BOOSTER To hook up the equalizer/booster, connect the wires and install the correct fuses as described on the following pages. Caution: To protect your vehicle's electrical system, disconnect the cable from the vehicle battery's positive (+) terminal before you connect the equalizer/booster. (This disconnects power from your vehicle's clock, your auto sound system's tuner memories, and any other clock or memory devices in your vehicle. You must later reset these.) CONNECTING THE WIRES Place the equalizer/booster as close as possible to the selected mounting location. Then route the wires and temporarily connect the equalizer/booster as follows: 1. Connect the equalizer/booster's five-pin harness to the radio/cassette player's five-wire socket (includes a red power wire). If your radio/cassette player has RCA-type jacks, see "Connecting the Equalizer/Booster with RCA-Type Line Output Jacks". Then continue with Step 2. 2. Connect the equalizer/booster's black (ground) wire to a chassis ground, such as a clean metal bolt attached to the vehicle's frame. Be sure the bolt is not insulated from the frame by a plastic part. 3. Connect the front speaker harness supplied with your radio/cassette player to the equalizer/booster's output FRONT socket. Use a wire tie to keep the harness' red power wire out of the way. Connect the red power wire with a 10 amp fuse to the vehicle's fuse block that turns on and off with the ignition. This connection provides power to the equalizer/booster when you turn on the ignition, and turns off power when you turn off the ignition. This prevents your vehicle's battery from being drained if you leave on the equalizer/booster when you turn off the ignition. 4. Move the switch on the bottom of the equalizer/booster to 8 ohm if you are connecting two sets of speakers. Move it to 4 ohm if you are connecting only front speakers. 5. Connect the front speakers to the front speaker harness. 6. If you want to connect rear speakers to your equalizer/booster, you need an optional rear speaker harness. Connect it to the equalizer/ booster's REAR socket. Connect the rear speakers to the rear speaker harness. If this harness has a red power wire, use a wire tie to keep the red wire out of the way. 7. Proceed to "Installing the Fuses." Connecting the Equalizer Booster with RCA-Type Line Output Jacks If the existing auto-sound component (radio or tape player) has RCA-Type line output jacks: 1. Connect the radio/tape player's line outputs to the equalizer/ booster's LINE INPUT jacks using shielded cables with RCA-Type plugs. (Connect left to left and right to right). 2. Disconnect the square, in-line connectors in the equalizer/booster's input wiring harness. Installing the Fuses Before you use the equalizer/booster, you must install fuses of the proper rating. Check the rating of the fuse originally supplied in the radio/cassette player's front speaker harness. This harness is now installed between the qualizer/booster and the speakers. Then follow the appropriate procedure. If the fuse is a 3-amp fuse, remove it from Harness A, but do not put it elsewhere. The red power lead comes with a 10 amp fuse installed in the red power lead. 7 amps of power are used in the equalizer/booster. The remaining 3 amps flow to the radio cassette. In the fuse in Harness A is rated higher than 3 amps, move it to Harness B. Replace the fuse in the red power lead with a fuse rated 7 amps higher than the one moved to Harness B. For example, if you moved a 4 amp fuse to Harness B, install an 11 amp fuse in the red power lead. Notes: Use only standard 30 mm fuses. To open a fuse holder, push the two parts together and twist them so they spring apart. To assemble a fuse holder, push the parts together and twist then so they snap together. It is not necessary to connect the red fuse wire from the front speaker harness to power. Testing the Connections After you connect the wires and install the fuses, reconnect the cable to the vehicle battery's positive (+) terminal. Test the equalizer/booster to be sure the connections are correct. See "Operation." MOUNTING THE EQUALIZER/BOOSTER After you test the equalizer/booster and are sure everything operates properly, disconnect the cable from the vehicle battery's positive (+) terminal, and disconnect the equalizer/booster. Then mount the equalizer/ booster as follows: 1. Temporarily attach the mounting brackets to the equalizer/booster. 2. Position the equalizer/booster in the mounting position, see "Choosing a Mounting Location." Mark the positions for the mounting brackets on the mounting surface by tracing the outside edges of the mounting brackets. Note: Before drilling any holes, make sure you will not damage anything on the other side of the mounting surface. 3. Remove the mounting brackets from the equalizer/booster, and position them as marked on the mounting surface. Then trace the positions for the mounting holes. 4. Drill 3/16-inch holes where you traced the mounting hole positions. Be sure you do not damage anything on the other side of the mounting surface. 5. Attach the mounting brackets to the mounting surface using the supplied sheet-metal screws, large lock washers, and large flat washers. 6. Attach the equalizer/booster to the mounting bracket using the supplied machine screws, small lock washers, and small flat washers. There will be two sets of this combinations of screws on each side. 7. Reconnect the equalizer/booster to your auto sound system. Reconnect the cable to the vehicle battery's positive (+) terminal.
