40 Watt EQ/Booster (120-1966) Installation Faxback Doc. # 7560 Before you install the equalizer/booster, carefully read all installation instructions. If you are unsure about any part of the installation process, we recommend that you have a professional install your equalizer/booster. Note the following before you begin installing the equalizer/booster: * Be sure your vehicle has a 12-volt DC, negative-ground electrical system. If it does not or if you are not sure, have a professional install your equalizer/booster. * If you connect front and rear speakers to the equalizer/booster, each speaker must have an impedance of 8 ohms or more. If you connect only one pair of speakers, each speaker must have an impedance of 4 ohms or more and you must connect the speakers to the front speaker harness. * Before you mount the equalizer/booster, temporarily connect the equalizer/booster as described in "Connecting the Equalizer/Booster". Do not mount the Equalizer/Booster until you are sure the connections work. SUPPLIED HARDWARE The following items are supplied with the equalizer/booster. Be sure you locate these items before you throw away the packing materials. 1 - Left-Bracket 4 - Machine Screws 4 - Small Flat Washers 4 - Large Flat Washers 1 - Right-Bracket 4 - Small Lock Washers 4 - Sheet-Metal Screws 4 - Large Lock Washers 1 - 7-Amp Fuse CHOOSING A MOUNTING LOCATION Choose a mounting location that: * Is as close as possible to your vehicle's radio/cassette player or other main auto-sound component * Does not interfere with the vehicle's operation * Is not directly in front of a heating vent * Lets you drill mounting holes without damaging other vehicle components * Allows enough leg room for passengers * Lets you conveniently and safely route wires CONNECTING THE EQUALIZER/BOOSTER To connect the equalizer/booster, connect the wires and install the correct fuses as described in the following pages. CAUTION: To protect your vehicle's electrical system, disconnect the cable from the vehicle battery's positive (+) terminal before you connect the equalizer/booster. (This disconnects power from your vehicle's clock, your auto sound system's tuner memories, and any other clock or memory devices in your vehicle. You must later reset these.) CONNECTING THE WIRES Place the equalizer/booster as close as possible to the selected mounting location. Then, route the wires, and temporarily disconnect the equalizer/ booster as follows: 1. Connect the equalizer/booster's five-wire harness to the radio/cassette player's five-wire socket (includes a red power wire). 2. Connect the equalizer/booster's black (ground) wire to a chassis ground, such as a clean metal bolt attached to the vehicle's frame. Be sure that the bolt is not insulated from the frame by a plastic part. 3. Connect the front speaker harness supplied with your radio/cassette player to the equalizer/booster's FRONT socket. Be sure that this harness's red power wire is connected to a terminal in the vehicle's fuse block that turns on and off with the ignition. This connection provides power to the equalizer/booster when you turn on the ignition, and turns off the ignition. This prevents your vehicle's battery from being drained if you leave on the equalizer/booster when you turn off the ignition. 4. Connect the front speakers to the front speaker harness, with the white (-) and green (+) wires to the left front speaker and the gray (-) and brown (+) wires to the right front speaker. 5. Connect the rear speaker harness to the equalizer/booster's rear socket. Connect the rear speakers to the rear speaker harness, with the white (-) and green (+) wires to the left rear speaker and the gray (-) and brown (+) wires to the right rear speaker. If this harness has a red power wire, use a wire tie to keep the red wire out of the way. You can buy a rear speaker harness at your local Radio Shack store. 6. Proceed to "Installing the Fuses." CONNECTING THE EQUALIZER/BOOSTER TO YOUR EXISTING AUTO-SOUND SYSTEM IF THE EXISTING AUTO-SOUND COMPONENT (RADIO OR TAPE PLAYER) HAS RCA-TYPE LINE OUTPUT JACKS: 1. Connect the radio/tape player's line outputs to the equalizer/booster's LINE INPUT jacks using shielded cables with RCA- type plugs. (Connect left to left and right to right.) 2. Disconnect the square, in-line connectors in the equalizer/booster's input wiring harness. 3. Insert the equalizer/booster's output wiring plug into the matching jack on the existing radio/tape player (or into the matching jack that you or a qualified technician added to the existing component). IF THE EXISTING AUTO-SOUND COMPONENT (RADIO OR TAPE PLAYER) DOES NOT HAVE RCA-TYPE LINE OUTPUT JACKS: 1. Be sure that the square, in-line connectors in the equalizer/booster's input wiring harness are securely connected. 2. Insert the equalizer/booster's output wiring plug into the matching jack on the existing radio/tape player (or into the matching jack that you or a qualified technician added to the existing component). INSTALLING THE FUSES Before you use the equalizer/booster, you must install fuses of the proper rating. Check the rating of the fuses originally supplied in the radio/cassette player's front speaker harness. This harness is now installed between the equalizer/booster and the fuse block and is shown in the diagram in the manual as Harness A. Then, follow the appropriate procedure. * If the fuse is a 3-amp fuse, replace it with the 7-amp fuse supplied with the equalizer/booster. * If the fuse is not a 3-amp fuse, replace it with a fuse that is rated at 4 amps higher (not supplied). Then, replace the fuse originally supplied in the equalizer/booster's harness (Harness B) with the fuse you removed from Harness A. NOTES: Use only standard 30 mm fuses. To open a fuse holder, push the two parts together and twist them so they spring apart. To reassemble a fuse holder, push the parts together and twist them so they snap together. TESTING THE CONNECTIONS After you connect the wires and install the fuses, reconnect the cable to the vehicle battery's positive (+) terminal. Test the equalizer/booster to be sure that the connections are correct. See "Operation". MOUNTING THE EQUALIZER/BOOSTER After you test the equalizer/booster, disconnect the cable from the vehicle battery's positive (+) terminal, and disconnect the equalizer/booster. Then, mount the equalizer/booster as follows. 1. Temporarily attach the mounting brackets to the equalizer/booster. 2. Position the equalizer/booster in the mounting location. Then, mark the positions for the mounting brackets on the mounting surface by tracing the outside edges of the mounting brackets. 3. Remove the mounting brackets from the equalizer/booster, and position them as marked on the mounting surface. Then, trace the positions for the mounting holes. 4. Drill 3/16-inch holes in the marked locations. Be sure you do not damage anything on the other side of the mounting surface. 5. Attach the mounting brackets to the mounting surface using the supplied sheet-metal screws, large lock washers, and large flat washers, with a single large lock washer between each sheet-metal screw and large flat washer. 6. Attach the equalizer/booster to the mounting bracket using the supplied machine screws, small lock washers, and small flat washers, with a single small lock washer between each machine screw and small flat washer. 7. Reconnect the equalizer/booster. 8. Reconnect the cable to the vehicle battery's positive (+) terminal. CONNECTING A CD PLAYER To connect a portable CD player or other audio component that has a 1/8- inch headphone jack, use a patch cord with a 1/8-inch stereo plug at both ends. Plug the cord into the equalizer/booster's CD jack and the CD player's headphone jack. (tlc/all-09/15/94)
