XTS 22 Bookshelf Speaker (400-0229) Installation Faxback Doc. # 7594 SPEAKER PLACEMENT For the best stereo image, place a pair of speakers so the distance between them is about the same as the distance between the listening area and the point halfway between the speakers. If you must place the speakers farther apart, turn them slightly inward. If you must place them closer to each other, turn them slightly outward. Experiment with your speaker's placement to discover the best location for them. CONNECTIONS The local Radio Shack store has a wide selection of speaker wire. We recommend you use color-coded or marked wire to help you correctly connect the wire. Color-coded wires have a stripe running down one of the conductors and marked wires have ridges along one of the conductors. With the speakers in their approximate locations, measure the distance from each speaker to your receiver/amplifier. Use 18-gauge speaker wire (not supplied) for distances up to 50 feet. Use 16-gauge speaker wire (not supplied) for distances greater than 50 feet. 1. Separate the wire's two conductors at both ends for a length of about 4 inches. 2. Strip the insulation from the ends of each conductor to expose 1/4- inch of metal wire. 3. Connect one end of the colored or marked conductor to your receiver/ amplifier's right positive (+) terminal and one end of the other conductor to the receiver/amplifier's right negative (-) terminal. 4. Route the wire to your right speaker. 5. Press down the right speaker's red tab, located on the back of the speaker, insert the other end of the colored or marked conductor into the opening, then release the tab. 6. Follow the same procedure to connect the plain or unmarked speaker wire to the right speaker's black tab. 7. Repeat steps 3-6 to connect the left speaker. Note: For maximum bass response and best overall performance, connect your speakers so they are in phase with the amplifier (connect + with + and - with -). (LB/all-09/19/94)
