System 720 (130-1267) CD Operation Faxback Doc. # 7637 HANDLING THE DISCS This unit has been designed to play compact discs bearing the identification logo shown below. No other discs can be played. To remove a disc from its storage case, press down on the center of the case and lift the disc out, holding it carefully by the edges. Fingerprints and dust should be carefully wiped off the signal surface of the disc (glossy side) with a soft cloth. Wipe in a straight motion from the center to the outside of the disc. Never use chemicals such as record cleaning sprays, antistatic sprays or fluids, benzine or thinner to clean compact discs. These chemicals will permanently damage the plastic surface of the disc. Always place the compact disc in the disc tray with the label facing upward. Compact discs can be played on only one side. Discs should be returned to their cases after use to protect them from dust and scratches. To prevent warping the disc, do not expose it to direct sunlight, high humidity or high temperatures for extended periods of time. Do not apply paper or write anything on the disc surface. LOADING A DISC 1. Press the POWER button to switch the power ON (button IN). 2. Press the OPEN/CLOSE button to open the disc tray. Trays 2 and 3 reset to the front position. 3. Load the disc(s) on the tray(s) For 3-inch CDs, carefully place the disc in the depression in the center of the tray. 4. Press the DISC SKIP button to load discs 4, 5 and 1. Each time the DISC SKIP button is pressed, the carousel turns clockwise to the next tray position. NOTE: DO NOT TOUCH THE CAROUSEL WHILE IT IS ROTATING. 5. Press the OPEN/CLOSE button again to close the disc tray. AUTOMATIC CD FUNCTION SYSTEM Press the CD PLAY button to automatically select the CD mode and start CD play. PLAYING A DISC 1. Press the POWER button to switch the power ON (button IN). 2. Load a disc. 3. Press the DISC NUMBER button which corresponds to the tray number of the disc to be played. When only a disc number has been selected, play will start on track 1 of the selected disc. Example: To select disc number 2 4. Press the CD TRACK RIGHT ARROW or LEFT ARROW button to select a track number. If only a track number is selected when in STOP mode, the changer will skip the empty trays and play will start with track 1 of the first disc to load. NOTE: If a track number is selected which is greater than the highest track number on the disc, play will start with the last track on the disc. 5. Press either INDEX LEFT ARROW/RIGHT ARROW button to select the number of the index to be played first. NOTE: Some discs have tracks that are divided into sections. Each section is called an index and is numbered. If the selected track is not indexed, an index number can still be selected and displayed. However, play will start at the beginning of the track. If an index number is selected which is greater than the highest index number of the track, play will start at index number 1. 6. Press the CD PLAY button. The PLAY and EACH indicators light The display will show the disc, track, index numbers and elapsed playing time for the current track. Example: Track 4 on disc number 2 has been playing for 2 minutes 35 seconds. 7. Press the DISPLAY button once, twice or three times to display the following information: the remaining time of the current track, the total tracks and playing time on the current disc, and the total remaining tracks and the remaining time on the current disc. Example: Track 4 on disc number 2 has 1 minute and 50 seconds of playing time remaining. Example: During normal (or programmed) play, disc number 2 has 12 tracks and a total playing time of 49 minutes and 11 seconds. Example: During normal play, disc number 2 has 8 tracks and 33 minutes and 56 seconds of total playing time remaining. 8. Press the DISPLAY button again to return to the elapsed playing time on the current track display. During play, the elapsed playing time returns to the display approximately 10 seconds after the DISPLAY button is pressed. 9. Press the CD PAUSE button to temporarily stop play. The PLAY indicator turns off and the PAUSE indicator lights. Press the CD PAUSE button again, or press the CD PLAY button to continue. The PAUSE indicator turns off and the PLAY indicator lights. 10. Press the DISC SKIP button to select the next disc. TRACK SEARCH 1. Press and release the CD TRACK RIGHT ARROW button to advance to subsequent tracks. 2. Press and release the CD TRACK LEFT BUTTON to return to the beginning of the track currently playing. Press and hold down the CD TRACK LEFT ARROW button to return to previous tracks. MANUAL SCAN Press and hold down either INDEX LEFT ARROW/RIGHT ARROW button to quickly scan the disc in the forward or reverse direction. This unit features 2-speed scanning. The scanning speed will increase after the button is held down for approximately three seconds. The volume is lowered to approximately 1/4 of the current level. Manual scan can be operated when the unit is in the pause mode, but no sound will be heard. The unit will not scan beyond the beginning or the end of the disc. RANDOM PLAY Press the RANDOM button. The RANDOM indicator lights Press the CD PLAY button when in STOP mode. The unit will select and play discs and tracks at random until the STOP button is pressed. Press the CD PLAY button again to end random play. The RANDOM indicator turns off and normal play continues from that point. INTROSCAN Press the INTRO button to play the first 10 seconds of each track, unless another scanning time has been selected (see "Introscan Time Selection"). The INTRO indicator lights Press the CD PLAY button when in STOP mode. Introscan play will stop after the last track on disc number 5 has been scanned. Press the INTRO or CD PLAY button again to end introscan play. The INTRO indicator turns off and normal play continues from that point. Press the STOP button to end normal play, random play or introscan play. The PLAY, RANDOM and INTRO indicators turn off. The TIME display will show "0:00." The TRACK NUMBER AND INDEX NUMBER displays will show "1.01." NOTE: If you do not press the STOP button, the unit will stop when the last track on disc number 5 has finished playing. Introscan Time Selection Introscan play times of 1 to 99 seconds can be selected using the CD TRACK RIGHT ARROW or LEFT ARROW button. 1. Press the STOP button. 2. Press the CD TRACK RIGHT ARROW or LEFT ARROW button to select the desired scanning time. The TRACK section of the display will show this time in seconds. 3. Press the INTRO button. The INTRO indicator lights. 4. Press a DISC NUMBER button to select a disc number. 5. Press the CD PLAY button. Introscan play will start. Starting Introscan From A Selected Track 1. Press a DISC NUMBER button to select a disc number. 2. Press the CD TRACK RIGHT ARROW or LEFT ARROW button to select a track number. 3. Press the CD PLAY button, then press the INTRO button immediately. Introscan play will start at the disc and track numbers selected in steps 1 and 2. Each track will be played for approximately 10 seconds, unless another scanning time has been selected (see "Introscan Time Selection"). PROGRAMMED PLAY A program cannot be entered during play. Entering A Program 1. Press the STOP button. 2. Press a DISC NUMBER button to select a disc number. Example: To select disc number 2 3. Press the CD TRACK RIGHT ARROW or LEFT ARROW button to select a track number. 4. Press the MEMORY button. The MEMORY indicator lights. The TIME display will show "P-01." If the MEMORY button is pressed before a disc number and a track number are selected, track 1 of the displayed disc number is entered as program selection number 1. To enter all of the tracks on a disc, select the disc number with a DISC NUMBER button, then press the MEMORY button. The TRACK NUMBER and INDEX NUMBER displays will show "ALL." A whole disc selection counts as one item. Up to 32 selections can be entered into the program memory, for play in any order. If you try to enter more selections, the TIME display will show "FULL" for approximately 1 second. NOTES: Track numbers which exceed the highest track on a disc can be programmed, but during play these tracks will be deleted and the next valid program selection will be played. Index numbers cannot be entered into a program. The times shown in the TIME display may differ slightly from the times listed in the literature that came with the compact disc. 5. Repeat steps 2 ~ 4 to enter additional selections into the program. Playing A Program 1. Press the CD PLAY button after entering a program. 2. Programmed play starts from the beginning of the first programmed track. 3. To play the programmed tracks in random order, press the RANDOM button, then press the CD PLAY button. The changer will select and play programmed discs and tracks at random until all of the programmed tracks have been played. If the REPEAT indicator is on, programmed random play will continue until the STOP button is pressed. If a disc is selected which has been programmed to play "ALL" selections, only one track will play. 4. To play the first 10 seconds of each programmed track, press the INTRO button, then press the CD PLAY button. 5. When all of the programmed tracks have been played, the changer will stop. The PLAY indicator turns off. The MEMORY indicator remains on. The TIME display will show "P - 01." NOTES: The INTRO button can be pressed after the CD PLAY button, but intro play will start with the track currently playing. The RANDOM button can be pressed after the CD PLAY button, but play will restart at random. Disc and Track numbers cannot be selected during programmed play. The DISC SKIP Button cannot be used during programmed play. Checking The Program Contents 1. Press the STOP button. 2. Press the CHECK button to view the contents of the program memory. 3. Each time the CHECK button is pressed, the contents of the next programmed selection are shown in the DISC NUMBER, TRACK NUMBER and TIME displays. 4. If the CHECK button is pressed and held down, the displays will show the entire contents of the program memory in numerical order. Changing A Program 1. Press the CHECK button until the selection you want to change appears on the display. 2. Press a DISC NUMBER button to select a new disc number. 3. Press the CD TRACK RIGHT ARROW or LEFT ARROW button to select a new track Number. 4. Press the MEMORY button. Adding Selections To A Program When adding new selections to a program before programmed play is completed, or after checking the program contents, first press the STOP button. 1. Press the STOP button. 2. Press a DISC NUMBER button to select a disc number. 3. Press the CD TRACK RIGHT ARROW or LEFT ARROW button to select a track number. 4. Press the MEMORY button. Ending Programmed Play 1. Press the STOP button to end programmed play. 2. Press the CLEAR button to clear the program memory. The MEMORY indicator turns off. NOTES: During programmed play, if the CLEAR button is pressed, programmed play will end and normal play continues from that point. The program memory is also cleared if the power to the unit is switched off. REPEAT PLAY Press the REPEAT button to select the desired type of repeat play, either all of the tracks on the loaded discs, one track, or programmed tracks (which can include various tracks on several discs, all of the tracks on one disc, or one track). Repeat All Of The Loaded Discs 1. Press the STOP button, then press the CLEAR button. The MEMORY indicator must be off. 2. Press the REPEAT button once. The REPEAT ALL indicators light. 3. Press the CD PLAY button. The PLAY indicator lights. 4. All of the loaded discs are repeatedly played until the STOP button is pressed. 5. Press the REPEAT button two more times to end repeat play. Normal play continues from that point. Repeat One Track 1. Press the STOP button, then press the CLEAR button. The MEMORY indicator must be off. 2. Press the REPEAT button twice. The REPEAT ONE indicators light. 3. Press a DISC NUMBER button to select a disc number. Example: To select disc number 2 4. Press the CD TRACK RIGHT ARROW or LEFT ARROW button to select a track number. 5. Press the CD PLAY button. The PLAY indicator lights. 6. The selected track is repeatedly played until the STOP button is pressed. 7. Press the REPEAT button once more to end repeat play. Normal play continues from that point. Repeat All Programmed Tracks 1. Press the STOP button, then press the CLEAR button. The MEMORY indicator must be off. 2. Enter a program (see "PROGRAMMED PLAY"). The MEMORY indicator lights. 3. Press the REPEAT button once. The REPEAT ALL indicators light. 4. Press the CD PLAY button. The Play indicator lights. 5. All of the programmed tracks are repeatedly played, in order, until the STOP button is pressed. 6. Press the REPEAT button two more times to end repeat play. Programmed play continues from that point. Repeat One Programmed Track 1. Press the STOP button, then press the CLEAR button. The MEMORY indicator must be off. 2. Enter a program (see "PROGRAMMED PLAY"). The program must include more than one track. The MEMORY indicator lights. 3. Press the REPEAT button twice. The REPEAT ONE indicators light. 4. Press the CD PLAY button. The PLAY indicator lights. 5. Press the CD TRACK RIGHT ARROW or LEFT ARROW button to select the programmed disc and track to be repeated. 6. The (one) Programmed track selected will play repeatedly until the STOP button is pressed. If a disc is selected which has been programmed to play "ALL" selections, only track 1 will play repeatedly until the STOP button is pressed. 7. Press the REPEAT button once more to end repeat play. Programmed play continues from that point. NOTE: If the STOP button is pressed, repeat play will end. CASSETTE TAPES CHECKING THE CASSETTE Before inserting a cassette into either deck, use a pencil to wind any loose tape onto one of the reels. CASSETTE TAPES Do not use endless cassettes or C-120 cassettes. This system is designed to use normal (type I) or chrome (type II) tapes. Proper recording quality is not possible with metal (type IV) tapes. TO PREVENT ACCIDENTAL TAPE ERASURE 1. Tape cassettes have two erase guard tabs. 2. Remove tab A to protect side 1. Remove tab B to protect side 2. 3. The RECORD mode will not operate when a cassette without erase guard tabs is used. 4. To erase or re-record a protected cassette, cover the erase guard tab holes with tape. CASSETTE DECK FEATURES AUTOMATIC TAPE SELECT SYSTEM When a cassette is inserted into either deck, the unit automatically identifies the type of tape (type I or II), and selects the proper internal recording or playback settings for the type of tape being used. AUTOMATIC TAPE FUNCTION SYSTEM Press the TAPE 1 or TAPE 2 PLAY button to select the TAPE mode and begin playback. AUTOMATIC TAPE STOP SYSTEM Tape 1 When the end of the tape is reached in any mode (play, record, rewind or fast forward), the tape will stop and the button pressed will be released. Tape 2 When the TAPE 2 REVERSE MODE button is set to the one-cycle mode (button DOWN) and the end of the tape is reached in the reverse play direction, the tape will stop and the TAPE 2 PLAY button will be released. AUTOMATIC RECORD LEVEL The System 720 features an automatic record level system. While recording or dubbing, the proper record level is set automatically. DOLBY B NOISE REDUCTION DOLBY Noise reduction reduces tape noise. Tapes must be recorded and played back with the DOLBY Noise Reduction on for the system to work correctly. DOLBY B ON (button IN): a.
