Micro-29 (140-1059) Operation Faxback Doc. # 7706 CAUTION: The tape stops and the recorder turns off when the tape reaches the end. However, we recommend you press STOP/EJECT as soon as possible after you finish recording or playing a tape. This releases the tape from the tape-handling parts. LOADING A MICROCASSETTE TAPE NOTE: We recommend MC-60 microcassette tapes (Cat. No. 44-640) for up to two hours of recording/playback time (at twice the normal speed), or MC-90 microcassette tapes (Cat. No. 44-644) for up to three hours of recording/playback time (at twice the normal speed). Follow these steps to load a microcassette tape. NOTE: Use a pencil to turn the cassette's hub and remove any tape slack. Avoid touching the tape. 1. Press STOP/EJECT to open the cassette compartment. 2. Insert the cassette into the compartment with its open edge facing out. NOTE: An arrow on the cassette compartment indicates tape travel direction. Be sure the tape's full reel is opposite the direction of the arrow. 3. Close the compartment. UNLOADING A MICROCASSETTE TAPE Follow these steps to unload a microcassette tape. 1. Press STOP/EJECT to stop recording or playback. 2. Press STOP/EJECT again to eject the tape. 3. Remove the cassette from the compartment. RECORDING Adjusting the Volume Control During recording, VOLUME affects microphone sensitivity (with either built-in or external microphones). The microphone is more sensitive at higher volume levels. When you use the VOX (voice actuation) feature, the VOLUME setting determines the sound level that activates the VOX circuit. At higher settings, a softer sound starts VOX recording. At lower settings, a louder sound activates VOX recording. Use a lower VOLUME setting in a high-noise environment such as in a plane or automobile. You can monitor the sound level by connecting the supplied earphone to the EAR jack. See "Using the Earphone." Basic Recording Follow these steps to record. CAUTIONS: To protect the recorder, press RECORD only when a cassette tape is loaded. Do not force down RECORD. If you cannot easily press RECORD, check the cassette tape's erase-protection tabs. See "Preventing Accidental Erasure" for more information. 1. Load the cassette tape. See "Loading a Cassette Tape." 2. Set TAPE SPEED as follows: To double the tape's recording/playback time, set TAPE SPEED to 1.2. This setting allows 120 minutes total recording/playback time on an MC-60 tape or 180 minutes on an MC-90 tape. For better sound quality, set TAPE SPEED to 2.4. This setting allows 60 minutes total recording/playback time on an MC-60 and 90 minutes on an MC-90 tape. 3. Set PLAY/VOX to NORM/OUT if you want to manually start and stop recording. Set PLAY/VOX to FAST/IN to use voice-actuated recording. Recording begins when the recorder picks up sound and stops a few seconds after the sound stops. NOTE: The voice-actuated feature saves power and tape if there are long or frequent pauses in the presentation you are recording. 4. Press RECORD to begin recording. This also pushes down PLAY. If PLAY/VOX is set to NORM/OUT, recording begins and the REC/BATT indicator lights. If PLAY/BOX is set to FAST/IN, recording begins and the REC/BATT indicator lights only when the recorder picks up sound. 5. Adjust VOLUME to set the microphone sensitivity. See "Adjusting the VOLUME." 6. To mark the beginning of the recording, press INDEX. You hear a low- pitched tone when the tape reaches the mark in the review mode. See "Using Index." 7. Press STOP/EJECT to stop the tape. NOTE: To record on the other side of the tape, unload the cassette tape, turn it over, and reload it. Using an External Microphone You can use an external microphone with a 3/32-inch plug (not provided) for recording. Insert the microphone's plug into the MIC jack. NOTE: If your microphone's plug is a 1/8-inch mini type, use a 3/32-inch submini plug adapter such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 274-327. PLAYING A TAPE Follow these steps to play back a cassette tape. 1. Load the cassette tape. 2. Set TAPE SPEED to the speed used when the tape was recorded. 3. Set PLAY/VOX to NORM/OUT to listen to the tape at normal speed. If you want to listen to the tape in accelerated speed, set PLAY/VOX to FAST/IN. 4. Press REWIND/REV or FAST-F/CUE to rewind or fast-forward the tape to the passage you want to hear. (See "Using FAST-F/CUE and REWIND/REV.") 5. Press PLAY. 6. Adjust VOLUME to a comfortable listening level. 7. Press STOP/EJECT to stop playback. NOTE: To play the other side of the tape, unload the cassette tape, turn it over and reload it. USING FAST-F/CUE AND REWIND/REV Press FAST-F/CUE to rapidly move a tape forward. Press REWIND/REV to rapidly move a tape backward. If you press FAST-F/CUE or REWIND/REV during playback, you can hear the tape at a faster speed as it fast-forwards (cue) or rewinds (review). When you release the button, the recorder resumes normal playback. If you are in review mode and you have marked an index, you hear a low-pitched tone when the tape reaches that point. If you press FAST-F/CUE or REWIND/REV when the tape is stopped, the button locks down. The tape advances or rewinds until you press STOP/EJECT or the tape reaches the end. QUICK RECORD During play, simply press record to go directly to the record mode without press STOP/EJECT. USING PAUSE To momentarily stop the recorder, slide PAUSE in the direction of the arrow. Slide PAUSE in the opposite direction of the arrow to resume operation. USING THE TAPE COUNTER You can use the tape counter to mark locations of specific sections of tape. Press the reset button on the right to set the counter to 000 at the beginning of a tape. As the tape plays or records, note the counter reading at the point(s) to which you want to return. USING INDEX To mark the beginning of a recording, press INDEX. You hear a low-pitched tone when the tape reaches the mark in the review mode. USING THE EARPHONE Follow these steps to listen to a recorded cassette in privacy. You can also use the supplied earphone to monitor a recording and check microphone sensitivity. 1. Set VOLUME to MIN. 2. Plug the earphone's plug into the recorder's EAR jack. The built-in speaker automatically disconnects. 3. Adjust the VOLUME to a comfortable listening level. Hearing Comfort and Your Health To protect your hearing, follow these guidelines when you use headphones. Set the volume to the lowest setting before you begin listening. After you begin listening, adjust the volume to a comfortable level. Do not listen at extremely high volume levels. Extended high-volume listening can lead to permanent hearing loss. Once you set the volume, do not increase it. Over time, your ears adapt to the volume level, so a volume level that does not cause discomfort might still damage your hearing. Traffic Safety Do not wear the earphone while operating a motor vehicle or riding a bicycle. This can create a traffic hazard and is illegal in some areas. (ALL-9/29/94)
