CTR-73 (140-1053/A) Operation Faxback Doc. # 7730 PLAYING A TAPE 1. Press the STOP/EJECT to open the cassette compartment. 2. Insert a cassette into the slot on the compartment lid so the open edge of the cassette faces up and the full reel of tape is toward the left. 3. Close the cassette compartment lid. 4. Press PLAY. 5. Adjust VOLUME and TONE to the desired levels. 6. Press STOP to stop the tape. 7. Press FAST-F to rapidly advance the tape. Press STOP to stop the fast-forward motion. 8. Press REWIND to rapidly rewind the tape. Press STOP to stop rewinding. USING CUE/REVIEW You can use FAST-F and REWIND while you are in the middle of play mode to quickly find a particular section. Press and hold either FAST-F (cue) or REWIND (review) while the tape is playing. You hear a high-pitched squeal. When the tape reaches a blank section between selections, the squeal stops. Release FAST-F or REWIND at that point to resume normal playback. USING THE TAPE COUNTER You can use the tape counter to mark the location of a specific section of tape. Press the reset button on the right to set the counter to 000 at the beginning of the tape. Then, as the tape plays or records, note the counter reading at the point(s) to which you want to return. RECORDING Using the Built-in Microphone 1. Refer to Steps 1 through 3 in "Playing a Tape." 2. Position the recorder so the built-in condenser microphone faces the sound source. If you are dictating into the unit, speak in a normal voice 6 to 8 inches away from the microphone. The ALC (Automatic Level Control) circuit sets the recording level automatically. 3. Press RECORD. Recording begins. 4. Press PAUSE to temporarily stop recording. Press it again to resume recording. 5. Press STOP to stop recording. 6. Use FAST-F and REWIND to rapidly move the tape as needed. USING AN EXTERNAL MICROPHONE 1. Insert the 1/8-inch plug of an optional external microphone into the MIC (microphone) jack. 2. If the microphone has a separate, small remote operation plug, insert that plug into the REM (remote) jack. Inserting the microphone plug into the MIC jack disconnects the internal microphone. 3. Record using the same technique as you used with the built-in microphone. However, if your microphone has a remote on-off switch, you can use that switch to start and stop the recorder. CAUTION: Be sure to press STOP/EJECT when you finish recording. Do not store the unit unless you first pressed STOP/EJECT. During recording the tape mechanism's capstan and pinch roller are in contact. If you leave the mechanism engaged, a flat spot can develop on the roller causing uneven or distorted sound. RECORDING FROM AN EXTERNAL SOURCE You can record from a tuner, radio, TV sound, or any high-level signal source. Obtain an audio connecting cord with a 1/8-inch plug on one end appropriate for your external sound source. Your local Radio Shack store can assist you to select the correct cord. 1. Insert the 1/8-inch plug into the AUX (auxiliary) jack on the recorder. When you insert the plug, you disconnect the built-in microphone and any external microphone that might be connected. 2. Connect the other end of the cord to the earphone output jack, line output jack, tape output jack, or similarly designated jack on the source unit. 3. Follow Steps 3 through 6 in "Using the Built-In Microphone." The ALC circuit sets the recording level automatically. The VOLUME and TONE controls have no effect on the recorded sound. During recording, the speaker is muted. If you want to monitor the recording, use the supplied earphone. USING AN EARPHONE You can use the earphone for private listening. Insert the plug of the earphone into the EAR (earphone) jack. This automatically disconnects the internal speaker. You can also connect an external or pillow-type speaker to this jack. You can monitor the recording with the earphone. Just plug the earphone to the EAR jack. Do not use an external or pillow-type speaker, because this might cause acoustic feedback. (ALL-9/27/94)
