PLAY briefly appears, followed by the play indicator (PLAY) and the counter display. 6. To pause playback, press PAUSE. The pause indicator (||) appears. To resume playback, press PAUSE or PLAY. 7. To stop playback, press STOP. STOP briefly appears, followed by the counter display. Then press the OPEN/CLOSE to open the compartment. NOTE: You can also stop playback by press OPEN/CLOSE. The compartment automatically opens in about 2 seconds. UNDERSTANDING THE DISPLAY The DCC deck's display shows you the status of the deck during operation. The indicators on the display denote specific functions. The middle of the display can show any of the following types of information: the current tape count, the number of the current track, the elapsed or remaining time on the entire tape or current track, or text information about a prerecorded stereo DCC. NOTE: Some track information does not appear for user-recorded DCCs. The Tape Counter The tape counter shows the current tape position as a number between 000 and 999. The tape counter resets to 000 when you press OPEN/CLOSE to open the cassette compartment. To reset the tape counter to 000 at any time, press COUNTER/DISPLAY RESET. The Timers The timers show the total elapsed time of the tape, the total remaining time on the tape, the elapsed time of the current track, and the remaining time on the current track. To change the timer display, press COUNTER/DISPLAY MODE. Repeatedly press COUNTER/DISPLAY MODE to display the timers and tape counter in the following order: TOTAL ELAPSED TOTAL REMAIN TRACK ELAPSED TRACK REMAIN COUNTER Under each timer indicator, the elapsed or remaining time appears in hours, minutes and seconds. The Text Display Many stereo prerecorded DCCs contain text information about the recording. This information is usually divided into three categories: the album title, track title, and album credits (such as the recording artist's name). The DCC deck can display up to 12 characters for each category. If any category contains more than 12 characters, the deck display an abbreviated form of the information. To display a category of information, press COUNTER/DISPLAY TEXT during playback. Repeatedly press COUNTER/DISPLAY MODE to display each category in succession. The deck display the categories in the following order: Album Title Track Title Album Credits NOTES: The text display remains until you press TEXT again or OPEN/CLOSE. The text display does not function for four-sector mono DCCs or user-recorded DCCs. The Signal Level Indicator The DCC deck's signal level indicator lets you monitor signal levels for the left and right channels. The top row of numbers appears when you play a standard audio cassette. The bottom row of numbers appears when you record a DCC. See "Recording." CHANGING THE TAPE DIRECTION To reverse the direction of tape playback, press DIRECTION during playback or while the deck is stopped. The tape direction indicator (<||>) shows the new direction. > indicates Side A and < indicates Side B. NOTE: If you loaded a four-sector mono DCC, the display shows the current sector (A, B, C, or D). See "Playing a Four-Sector Mono DCC." The rotating indicator next to the tape counter moves clockwise or counterclockwise to show the direction the tape is moving. USING FAST-FORWARD AND REWIND Unlike most standard audio cassette decks, the DCC deck's fast-forward and rewind buttons do not change functions according to the tape direction. Pressing >> always fast-forwards Side A or B to the end of the tape, and pressing << always rewinds Side A or B to the beginning. The DCC deck automatically stops the tape when it reaches the beginning or end. Press and hold down << during playback to rewind the tape. Release << to resume playback. Press and hold down >> during playback to fast-forward the tape. Release >> to resume playback. While the tape is stopped, press << to rewind the tape, and press << to fast-forward the tape. NOTE: When you press and hold down << or >> during playback of a standard audio cassette, you hear the program material at a faster speed and reduced volume. USING AUTO-REVERSE The DCT-2000 DCC deck has three types of auto-reverse -- single, full- tape, and continual. Auto-reverse works with both standard audio cassettes and DCCs. Single auto-reverse plays one side of a tape and stops. Then the deck reverses the tape direction indicator and prepares to play the other side of the tape. Press PLAY to play the other side. Full-tape auto-reverse automatically begins playing the second side of a tape after the first side ends. When the second side ends, the tape stops. NOTES: Full tape auto-reverse is the default reverse mode when you turn on the deck. When you select full-tape auto-reverse for four-sector mono DCCs, the deck plays all four sectors (A, B, C, and D). Continual auto-reverse operates like full-tape auto-reverse, except the tape changes direction each time one side of the tape ends and continually does so (up to eight times) until you stop the tape. To select single auto-reverse, repeatedly press REV MODE until this symbol appears: ÄÄ> <ÄÄ To select full-tape auto-reverse, repeatedly press REV MODE until this symbol appears: ÄÄ>¿ <ÄÄÄÙ To select continual auto-reverse, repeatedly press REV MODE until this symbol appears: ÚÄÄ>¿ À<ÄÄÙ NOTE: As you repeatedly press REV MODE, wait about 1 second between presses USING ASMS The DCC deck has ASMS (automatic search music system). This automatically fast-forwards or rewinds a DCC or standard audio cassette to the beginning of a track (or selection). ASMS works when the tape is stopped, playing, or paused. NOTE: ASMS does not function while a four-sector mono DCC plays, when an ID indicator appears on the display, or while the deck plays a programmed sequence of tracks. To fast-forward the tape to the beginning of the next track (or selection), press >>|. To rewind the tape to the beginning of the current track (or selection), press |<<. You can also fast-forward or rewind more than one track on DCCs. To fast-forward more than one track, subtract the number of the current track from the number of the track you want to play. Then repeatedly press >>| as many times as the result. For example, if you are currently playing, or at the beginning of, Track 2 and want to fast-forward to Track 5, press >>| three times (5 - 2 = 3). The display indicates the number of times you press >>| to the right of the track number display. To rewind more than one track, subtract the number of the track you want to play from the number of the current track. Then repeatedly press |<< as many times as the result, plus one more. For example, if you are currently playing Track 4 and want to play Track 2, press |<< three times [(4 - 2) + 1 = 3]. The first time you press |<< the tape moves to the beginning of the current track. NOTES: If the deck is stopped or paused while at the beginning of a track, press |<< the same number of times as for fast-forward. You can fast-forward or rewind only one track on standard audio cassettes. USING THE REMOTE CONTROL The supplied remote control lets you operate the deck's playback functions from up to 25 feet away. To use the remote control, point it at the DCC deck's front panel. The buttons on the remote control operate the same as the controls on the deck's front panel. NOTE: If the remote control does not operate properly, its batteries might be weak or dead. Replace the batteries as described under "Installing the Remote Control's Batteries." USING HEADPHONES To listen with headphones, connect the 1/4-inch plug of a pair of stereo headphones to the deck's PHONES jack on the front panel. WARNING: To protect your hearing, be sure you turn LEVEL to MIN before you begin playback of a tape. After you start playback, gradually turn LEVEL clockwise for the desired volume. PROGRAMMING A SEQUENCE OF TRACKS You can program the deck to play a sequence of tracks you select from a stereo prerecorded DCC and skip all the remaining tracks. The programmed sequence can contain up to 20 tracks. To program a sequence of tracks, follow these steps: 1. Load the DCC. 2. Press PROGRAM on the deck's front panel. PROGRAM and the track number appear on the display. 3. Repeatedly press << or >> until the display shows the number of the track you want to play. 4. Press PLAY. The play indicator and two digits next to the track number appear. The digits show how many tracks are programmed. For example 02 means there are two tracks programmed. 5. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 to program additional tracks. NOTES: To review the sequence, repeatedly press << or >>. The play indicator appears for all selected tracks. You can program tracks in any order, but they play in sequence. For example, if you program Track 5 and then program Track 2, Track 2 plays before Track 5 during playback. 6. Press PROGRAM to store the sequence in memory. NOTES: If you decide not to store the sequence, press STOP before you press PROGRAM to cancel the storing procedure. The sequence stays in memory until you press POWER, OPEN/CLOSE, or PROGRAM. You cannot review the sequence after you store it. When you store a sequence, PROGRAM appears on the display to show that the deck is set to play the sequence. To play the programmed sequence, press PLAY. The tape rewinds to the beginning. Then, if Track 1 is not the first track in the sequence, the tape fast-forwards to the beginning of the first track and starts playback. After the first track in the sequence finishes playing, the tape fast- forwards to the next track in the sequence and resumes playback. This process repeats until all tracks in the sequence have played, or until you stop the tape. To pause playback at any time, press PAUSE. To resume play, press PAUSE or PLAY. NOTES: The ASMS buttons (|<< and >>|), rewind (<<), fast-forward (>>), and DIRECTION do not function during playback of a programmed sequence. To restart the sequence from the beginning, press STOP while the sequence plays. Then press PLAY. The tape rewinds to the beginning, fast-forwards to the beginning of the first track in the sequence, and starts playback. The change to normal play, press REV MODE while the deck is stopped. Repeatedly press REV MODE to select a reverse mode option as described in "Using Auto-Reverse." To return to programmed play, repeatedly press REV MODE until PROGRAM appears. To erase the programmed sequence from memory, press OPEN/CLOSE, PROGRAM, or POWER. (ALL-10/6/94)
