For the best results, we recommend alkaline batteries such as Radio Shack Cat.No. 23-552 or rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries such as Cat. No. 23-125. Replace the batteries when B flashes on the display, the sound distorts, or the volume weakens. Installing/Replacing Batteries 1. Set CHG/OFF to OFF. 2. Slide off the battery compartment cover in the direction of the arrow. 3. If necessary, remove and discard the old batteries. Cautions: Always dispose of old batteries promptly and properly. Never leave dead, old, or weak batteries in the CD player. 4. Place four batteries in the compartment as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked in the compartment. Cautions: Use only fresh batteries of the required size and type. Never mix fresh and old batteries, or alkaline and nickel- cadmium batteries. If you do not plan to use the CD player for a month or more, or you plan to use an optional AC or DC adapter, remove and store the batteries. Batteries can leak chemicals which corrode or damage electronic circuits. 5. Replace the battery compartment cover. Charging Nickel-Cadmium Batteries Nickel-cadmium batteries come fully discharged. You can charge the batteries while they are in the battery compartment using an AC adapter (not supplied), such as Cat. No. 16-2018. Or you can use a DC adapter (not supplied, such as Cat. No. 270-1563, along with an Adaptaplug kit such as Cat. No. 273-1647. You can also use an external battery charger (not supplied), such as Cat. No. 23-239. Warning: Do not try to charge non-rechargeable batteries. Doing so causes the batteries to become very hot and they could explode. Follow these steps to recharge nickel-cadmium batteries while they are in the battery compartment. Note: You can play a CD while recharging the batteries: however, this could cause the batteries to recharge more slowly. 1. Set POWER ON/OFF to OFF. 2. Place four nickel-cadmium batteries in the compartment as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked in the compartment. Caution: Never mix rechargeable and non-rechargeable batteries. 3. Set CHG/OFF to CHG. 4. Set tip polarity on the adapter to positive (+), following the instructions supplied with the adapter. 5. Insert the adapter's 4.0mm plug into the CD player's DC 6V jack. 6. Plug the adapter's other end into a standard AC outlet. 7. When the batteries are fully charged, set CHG/OFF to OFF. Note: It takes about 15 hours to charge fully discharged nickel-cadmium batteries. 8. Unplug the AC adapter from the AC outlet, then disconnect the adapter from the CD player. Note: This portable CD player is capable of using nickel-cadmium batteries. At the end of the batteries' useful life, they must be recycled or disposed of properly. Contact your local, county, or state hazardous waste management authorities for information on recycling or disposal programs in your area. Some options that might be available are: municipal curb-side collection, drop-off boxes at retailers, recycling collection centers, and mail-back programs. Charging Tips Fully discharge the batteries occasionally by playing the CD player until it no longer plays. Then fully recharge the batteries. This helps restore the batteries' full charging capacity. Avoid charging the batteries in a hot environment (more than 113 degrees F). Doing so can permanently reduce the batteries' charging capacity. USING AC POWER You can power your CD player from standard AC power, using an AC adapter such as Cat. No. 16-2018 (not supplied). Cautions: You must use an AC adapter that supplies regulated 6 volts and delivers at least 500 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to positive, and its plug must correctly fit the CD player's DC 6V jack. Using an adapter that does not meet these specifications could seriously damage the CD player or the adapter. When you finish using the AC adapter, disconnect it from the AC outlet first, then unplug it from the CD player. Follow these steps to use an AC adapter. 1. Set CHG/OFF to OFF. Warning: If alkaline batteries are installed in the CD player, do not set CHG/OFF to CHG. Doing so causes the alkaline batteries to become very hot and they could explode. 2. Set tip polarity on the AC adapter to positive (+), following the instructions supplied with the adapter. 3. Insert the adapter's 4.0mm plug into the CD player's DC 6V jack. 4. Plug the other end of the adapter into a standard AC outlet. USING VEHICLE BATTERY POWER You can power your CD player from your vehicle's battery, using an optional DC adapter such as Cat. No. 270-1563, along with an Adaptaplug kit such as Cat. No. 273-1647 (not supplied). Cautions: This CD player is designed for use with vehicles that have a 12-volt, negative-ground electrical system. Most vehicles have this type of electrical system, but if you are unsure about the type your vehicle has, contact the vehicle dealer. Using the CD player with a different type of electrical system could damage the CD player or the vehicle's electrical system. You must use a DC adapter that supplies regulated 6 volts and delivers at least 500 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to positive, and its plug must correctly fit the CD player's DC 6V jack. Using an adapter that does not meed these specifications could seriously damage the CD player or the adapter. To protect your vehicle's electrical system, always disconnect the adapter from the cigarette-lighter socket before you unplug it from the CD player. Do not leave the adapter connected to the cigarette-lighter socket or to the CD player when the player is not in use. If you park your vehicle in the sun, temperatures inside can easily reach levels that could damage your CD player and your CDs. To prevent heat damage, do not expose your CD player or CDs to temperature extremes. Follow these steps to use your vehicle's battery power. 1. Set CHG/OFF to OFF. Warning: If alkaline batteries are installed in the CD player do not set CHG/OFF to CHG. Doing so causes the alkaline batteries to become very hot and they could explode. 2. Attach the 4.0mm plug to the adapter's cord. 3. Set the adapter's voltage switch to 6V. 4. Insert the adapter's barrel plug into the CD player's DC 6V jack. 5. Plug the other end of the adapter into your vehicle's cigarette- lighter socket. The red indicator on the adapter's case lights. CONNECTIONS You can listen to your CD-3450 CD player by connecting stereo headphones, amplified speakers, a home audio system, or a car stereo system. If needed, your local Radio Shack store carries a variety of earphones, amplified speakers, cassette adapters, cable adapters, and audio patch cables. CONNECTING HEADPHONES For private listening, plug a pair of stereo headphones with a 1/8-inch plug (such as Cat. No. 33-991, not supplied) into the CD player's PHONES jack. Listening Safely Do not listen at extremely high volume levels. Extended, high-volume listening can lead to permanent hearing loss. Follow these guidelines to protect your hearing, especially when you use headphones. Always start by setting the volume to the lowest level possible before you begin listening. Put the headphones on, then gradually increase the volume as necessary. Once you set the volume, do not increase it. Over a period of time, your ears adapt to the volume level, so a volume level that does not cause discomfort might still damage your hearing. Traffic Safety Do not wear headphones while operating a motor vehicle or riding a bicycle. This can create a traffic hazard and is illegal in some areas. Even though some headphones are designed to let you hear some outside sounds when listening at normal volume levels, they still present a traffic hazard. CONNECTING AMPLIFIED SPEAKERS To listen to your CD player through speakers, plug a pair of amplified speakers (such as Cat. No. 40-1267, not supplied) into the CD player's PHONES jack using the amplified speaker's Y-cable. CONNECTING TO A HOME AUDIO SYSTEM To listen to the CD player through your home audio system's amplifier and full-size speakers, connect the supplied Y-cable's phono plugs to the CD, AUX, or TV audio LEFT and RIGHT input jacks on your amplifier/receiver. If the jacks on your equipment do not match the plugs on the Y-cable, check with your local Radio Shack store for the proper cable adapter. CONNECTING TO A CAR STEREO SYSTEM You can listen to your CD player through your car's stereo in one of three ways. If your stereo has LINE IN jacks - connect the supplied Y-cable's 1/8-inch plug to the CD player's PHONES jack. Then connect the Y-cable's phono plugs to your car stereo's LINE IN jacks. (If the jacks on your equipment do not match the plugs on the cable, check with your local Radio Shack store for the proper cable adapter.) If your car stereo has a CD INPUT jack - you need a stereo patch cable such as Cat. No. 42-2387. Connect one end to your CD player's LINE OUT jack and the other end to your car stereo's CD INPUT jack. If your car stereo has a cassette player - you need a CD-to-cassette adapter such as Cat. No. 12-1951. Insert the adapter into the cassette player just as you would a regular cassette tape. Then connect the CD-to- cassette adapter's cord to the CD player's PHONES jack. You can mount your CD player in your car using a mounting bracket such as Cat. No. 42-3050/3051. (br/all-10/20/94)
