Model 17 (160-0409) Optional Connections Faxback Doc. # 7889 USING VEHICLE BATTERY POWER To power the Model 17 from your vehicle's battery, remove the AC adapter and connect the supplied DC power cord as described here. Removing the AC Adapter Follow these steps to remove the AC adapter. 1. Press POWER so the POWER indicator turns off. 2. Unplug the adapter from the AC outlet. 3. Unplug the adapter from the Model 17's DC POWER INPUT jack. 4. Press the adapter's tab, and pull up and remove the adapter. Connecting the DC Power Cord Plug the supplied DC power cord into the Model 17's DC POWER INPUT jack and into the vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket. CAUTIONS: Your vehicle must have a 12-volt, negative-ground electrical system. Use only the supplied DC power cord. Be sure the cigarette-lighter socket is free of ashes and other debris. Always plug the DC power cord into the Model 17 before you plug it into the cigarette-lighter socket. Always unplug it from the cigarette-lighter socket before you unplug it from the Model 17. If you use the Model 17 with the vehicle's engine turned off, protect the vehicle's battery from completely discharging by recharging the battery after every 4 hours of use. In addition, unplug the DC power cord as soon as you finish using the Model 17. Replacing the DC Power Cord's Fuse The DC power cord is fuse-protected. If the Model 17 does not work when you use the DC power cord, check the fuse and replace it if necessary. Follow these steps to check and change the fuse. 1. Twist the end of the DC power cord counter-clockwise to open the fuse compartment cover. Then remove the fuse. 2. If the fuse is blown, replace it with an identical, 5-amp fuse such as Cat. No. 270-1278. CONNECTING TO OTHER AUDIO/VIDEO EQUIPMENT You can connect the Model 17 to other audio/video equipment. This lets you monitor your 8mm camcorder or other video source, view 8mm tapes on another TV or monitor, or dub a tape to or from another VCR (of any format). For Output to Another Device To view or record the Model 17's TV signal or tape on another device, see the other device's owner's manual for related information. Then do the following. 1. Use video-quality shielded cables with phono-type connectors to connect the Model 17's AUDIO/VIDEO OUT jacks to the audio/video input jacks of the other device. 2. Play the tape. 3. To turn off the picture and sound on the Model 17, press MONITOR/OFF. To restore the sound and picture, press MONITOR/OFF again. For Input from Another Device To monitor or record from another device, see the other device's owner's manual for related information. Then do the following. 1. Use video-quality shielded cables with phono-type connectors to connect the other device's audio/video output jacks to the Model 17's AUDIO/VIDEO IN jacks. 2. Press POWER to turn on the Model 17. 3. Press INPUT SELECT so AUX appears on the screen. 4. Begin play on the other device. 5. To begin recording, slide RECORD on the Model 17 to right. To stop recording, press STOP on the Model 17. To turn off the picture and sound on the Model 17, press MONITOR OFF again. 6. To stop monitoring the other device, press INPUT SELECT so AUX disappears. CONNECTING TO AN OUTDOOR ANTENNA To connect to an outdoor antenna, remove the signal pin from the Model 17's antenna jack. Then connect the antenna as follows: If you are using 75-ohm coaxial cable, connect the antenna cable directly to the external antenna jack. If you have a combination VHF/UHF antenna and your antenna wire is 300-ohm, use an optional adapter (Cat. No. 15-1253) to make the connection. If you have separate VHF and UHF antennas, connect the separate antenna cables to a signal combiner.(available at your local Radio Shack store). Then connect the combiner's outlet to the Model 17. Refer to your antenna's installation instructions for additional information. CONNECTING TO A CABLE SYSTEM To receive cable channels, connect to your local cable system as described here. NOTE: The cable service's channel designations might not match the channel numbers that appear on the screen If you are not receiving scrambled channels, you can connect the cable directly to the Model 17 as shown in the following illustration. WARNING: Some states have laws restricting direct connections to cable wires (connections that do not go through the cable box). Check the laws in your area before making any connections. If you are receiving scrambled channels, you must connect the cable to the cable converter and connect the cable converter to the Model 17. Set the Model 17 to the cable box's output (Channel 3 or 4) and use the cable box to select the channel. (ALL-10/25/94)
