Model 98 (160-0536) Playing a Tape Faxback Doc. # 7913 1. Turn on the TV and set it to the same channel as the VCR's CHANNEL 3/4 switch (3 or 4). If you are using a TV that is connected to the VCR's AUDIO/VIDEO OUT jacks, set the TV to the video mode. 2. Hold the cassette with the main label facing up and the spine facing out from the VCR. Then insert the cassette into the VCR's compartment and gently push the center of its spine until the VCR completely draws it in. The VCR automatically turns on, the clock display changes to the tape counter display. If the erase-protection tab has not been removed from the cassette, playback automatically begins. CAUTION: Never insert anything except a VHS video cassette into the cassette compartment. You might damage the VCR's internal mechanisms. 3. If playback does not automatically begin, press PLAY. 4. Press STOP to stop playback before the end of the tape. Then press EJECT on the VCR to eject the cassette. If the tape reaches the end before you press STOP, the VCR automatically stops the tape and completely rewinds it. If the erase- protection tab has been removed, the VCR ejects the cassette after the tape fully rewinds. NOTE: You can press EJECT to eject a cassette when the VCR is off. The VCR's power temporarily turns on while the cassette ejects, then automatically turns off. The tape counter display changes to the clock display. SPECIAL FUNCTIONS The following information describes some of the Model 98's special on- screen, display, and search functions. Tape Motion The tape motion display shows you the tape motion during tape playback or recording. The display blinks in the stop mode and is steady during playback or recording. Slow-Motion For programs recorded at SP or EP speed, press SLOW \/ or /\ on the remote control during playback to activate the slow-motion function. The playback speed is automatically reduced to 1/10 of its normal speed. The VCR mutes the sound during slow-motion. During slow-motion playback, press SLOW \/ or /\ to vary the slow-motion speed between 1/5 and 1/30 of the normal playback speed. Press PLAY to return to normal playback. NOTES: If you leave the VCR in the slow-motion mode for 5 minutes, the VCR automatically stops. If the slow-motion picture is poor, adjust the tracking control. To reduce or eliminate jitter in slow-motion pictures, first press PAUSE/STILL and press and hold down CH/TRACK \/ or /\ (CHANNEL \/ or /\ on the VCR) until the picture is clear. Then press SLOW \/ or /\ to resume slow-motion. Freeze-Frame Freeze-frame lets you stop the tape and view a single frame. Press PAUSE/STILL during playback to freeze the picture. Press PLAY to return to normal playback. During freeze-frame, the picture quality is lower than during normal playback. However, the picture is best with recordings made at the SP or EP speed. NOTES: If you leave the VCR in the freeze-frame mode for 5 minutes, the VCR automatically stops. If a horizontal bar appears during freeze-frame, adjust the tracking in the slow-motion mode. To reduce or eliminate jitter in the freeze-frame picture, press and hold down CH/TRACK (CHANNEL on the VCR) \/ or /\ until the picture is clear. Frame Advance During the freeze-frame mode, you can advance the picture one frame at a time by repeatedly pressing PAUSE/STILL. This feature works best with video cassettes recorded at the SP or EP speed. Tracking Control For the best possible picture, the VCR automatically adjusts tracking each time you load a cassette. Depending on the quality of the tape, the automatic tracking system might not work well. In this case, you can manually adjust the tracking. Follow this procedure to manually adjust tracking. During playback, press and hold down CH/TRACK (CHANNEL on the VCR) \/ or /\ until you obtain the clearest picture. The tracking position indicators appear on the display. Within 3 seconds after you release the button, the tracking position indicators disappear and the clock or counter display reappears. The automatic tracking control mode is canceled. Follow these steps to restore automatic tracking. 1. Press PROGRAM. The menu display appears on the TV screen. 2. Press 4 to select the VCR SETUP menu. The TRACKING display shows MANUAL. 3. Press 4. The display changes to AUTO. 4. Press PROGRAM to exit the menu. The menu display reappears. 5. Press PROGRAM again to exit the menu display. Fast-Forward/Rewind and Visual Search When the VCR is stopped, press FAST-F or REWIND to move the tape quickly in the desired direction. You cannot see the tape picture or hear the tape sound when you use FAST-F or REWIND, but you can use the counter and memory functions to locate specific sections of tape. To use visual search, begin regular playback of a tape. Then press FAST-F to search forward, or press REWIND to search in reverse. The VCR plays the tape at a fast playback speed so you can watch and find the tape location you want to view. Press PLAY for normal playback. NOTES: VCR must appear on the VCR's display for visual search. During visual search, the sound is muted and the picture quality is lower than during normal playback. The search picture is best with tapes recorded at the SP or EP speed. Blue-Screen Display If no video signal is present, the blue-screen display appears on the TV's screen. You cannot record the blue screen. Real-Time Counter with Memory Your VCR's counter shows the actual tape run time, not a reference tape count. When you load the VCR's display. AS the tape plays, the counter displays the run time. If you rewind the tape past the zero point, the display shows the time with a minus (-) sign. Follow these steps to mark and return to a specific location on a tape. 1. If the clock appears on the VCR's display, press CLK/COUNT on the remote control to display the VCR's counter. 2. During playback, press RESET on the remote control at the location you want to return to. The counter displays 0:00:00. 3. Before you return to the selected location, press MEMORY so M appears on the display. 4. When you want to return to the marked location, press STOP then press <>. The tape rewinds or fast-forwards and automatically stops at the location where you reset the counter to 0:00:00. NOTE: The counter uses special signals on a recorded tape. Therefore, the counter does not work with blank tape or blank portions partially recorded tapes. Fast-Response System When you load a video cassette with its erase-protection tab intact, the VCR positions the tape next to the record/playback head for about 5 minutes. Within this period, you can start playback, recording, or any other tape motion the moment you press the appropriate button. This is useful any time you need a precise start for playback or recording. When you stop a tape during playback, recording, rewind, or fast-forward, the tape remains positioned next to the record/playback head for about 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, the fast-response system releases to protect the tape. Automatic Playback, Rewind, and Eject When you load a cassette with the erase-protection tab removed, playback begins automatically. When the tape reaches the end during manual recording, playback, or fast-forward, the VCR automatically rewinds to the beginning of the tape and ejects the cassette. If the memory function is activated, the tape stops at 0:00:00 and ejects the tape. (ALL-11/02/94)
