Model 99 (160-0537) Playing a Tape Faxback Doc. # 7932 1. Turn on the TV and set it to the same channel as the VCR's CHANNEL 3/4 switch (3 or 4). If you are using a TV that is connected to the VCR's AUDIO/VIDEO OUT jacks, set the TV to the video mode. 2. Hold the cassette with the main label facing up and the spine facing out from the VCR. Then insert the cassette into the VCR's compartment and gently push the center of its spine until the VCR completely draws it in. The VCR automatically turns on, the clock display changes to the tape counter display and the tape indicator appears on the display. If the erase-protection tab has been removed from the cassette, playback automatically begins. CAUTION: Never insert anything except a VHF video cassette into the cassette compartment. You might damage the VCR's internal mechanisms. 3. If playback does not automatically begin, press PLAY. 4. Press STOP to stop playback before the end of the tape. Then press EJECT on the VCR to eject the cassette. If the tape reaches the end before you press STOP, the VCR automatically stops the tape and completely rewinds it. If the erase- protection tab has been removed, the VCR ejects the cassette after the tape fully rewinds. NOTE: You can press EJECT to eject a cassette when the VCR is off. The VCR's power temporarily turns on while the cassette ejects, then automatically turns off. The tape counter display changes to the clock display. SPECIAL FUNCTIONS The following information describes some of the Model 99's special on- screen, display, and search functions. Blue-Screen Display If no video signal is present, the blue-screen display appears on the TV's screen. You cannot record the blue screen. Fast-Response System When you load a video cassette with its erase-protection tab intact, the VCR positions the tape next to the record/playback head for about 5 minutes. Within this period, you can start playback, recording, or any other tape motion the moment you press the appropriate button. This is useful any time you need a precise start for playback or recording. When you stop a tape during playback, recording, rewind, or fast-forward, the tape remains positioned next to the record/playback head for about 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, the fast-response system releases to protect the tape. Automatic Playback, Rewind, and Eject When you load a cassette with the erase-protection tab removed, playback begins automatically. When the tape reaches the end during manual recording, playback, or fast-forward, the VCR automatically rewinds to the beginning of the tape and ejects the cassette. If the memory function is activated, the tape stops at 0:00:00 and eject the tape. Tape Motion The tape motion display shows you the tape motion during tape playback or recording. The display blinks in the stop mode and is steady during playback or recording. Shuttle Dial Operation You can use the shuttle dial to change the tape direction and vary the playback speed. Freeze-Frame Freeze-frame lets you stop the tape and view a single frame. Press PAUSE/STILL during playback to freeze the picture. Press PLAY to return to normal playback. During freeze-frame, the picture quality is lower than during normal playback. However, the picture is best with recordings made at the SP or EP speed. NOTES: If you leave the VCR in the freeze-frame mode for 5 minutes, the VCR automatically stops. If a horizontal bar appears during freeze-frame, adjust the tracking in the slow-motion mode (see "Tracking Control" and "Slow Motion"). To reduce or eliminate jitter in the freeze-frame picture, press and hold down CHANNEL/TRACKING \/ or /\ (CHANNEL \/ or /\ on the VCR) until the picture is clear. Frame Advance During the freeze-frame mode, you can advance the picture one frame at a time by repeatedly pressing PAUSE/STILL. This feature works best with video cassettes recorded at the SP or EP speed. Slow-Motion For programs recorded at the SP or EP speed, turn the shuttle dial on the remote control to SLOW during playback or freeze-frame to activate the slow-motion function. The playback speed is automatically reduced to 1/5 of its normal speed, and the sound is muted. NOTES: If you leave the VCR in the slow-motion mode for 5 minutes, the VCR automatically stops. If the slow-motion picture is poor, adjust the tracking control by using the CHANNEL \/ or /\ on the VCR. (See "Tracking Control.") To reduce or eliminate jitter in slow-motion pictures, first press PAUSE/STILL and press and hold down CHANNEL/TRACKING \/ or /\ (CHANNEL \/ or /\ on the VCR) until the picture is clear. (See "Tracking Control.") Then turn the shuttle dial to resume slow- motion. Fast-Forward/Rewind and Visual Search When the VCR is stopped, press FAST-F or REWIND to move the tape quickly in the desired direction. You cannot see the tape picture or hear the tape sound when you use FAST-F or REWIND, but you can use the counter and memory functions to locate specific sections of tape. To use visual search, begin regular playback of a tape. Then press FAST-F (or turn the shuttle dial to the right) to search forward, or press REWIND (or turn the shuttle dial to the left) to search in reverse. The VCR pays the tape a a fast playback speed so you can watch and find the tape location you want to view. Press PLAY for normal playback. NOTES: VCR must appear on the VCR's display for visual search. During visual search, the sound is muted and the picture quality is lower than during normal playback. The search picture is best with tapes recorded at the SP or EP speed. Index Search The index search function returns to the beginning of the current program or skips to the beginning of the next program, then starts playback. 1. While the VCR is stopped or playing, press INDEX on the remote control. 2. Press FAST-F >> or << REWIND. Blank Search To locate the end of a recorded section of a partially recorded tape, press BLANK SEARCH on the remote control while the VCR is stopped. The tape advances rapidly, then automatically stops when it senses a blank section of tape (no recorded signal). If there are no blank sections on the tape, after searching to the end of the tape, the VCR rewinds the tape to the beginning (or to 0:00:00 if you activated the memory function), then stops. (See "Real-Time Counter with Memory.") Real-Time Counter With Memory Your VCR's counter shows the actual tape run time, not a reference tape count. When you load a cassette, the counter resets to 0:00:00 on the VCR's display. As the tape plays, the counter displays the run time. If you rewind the tape past the zero point, the display shows the time with a minus (-) sign. Follow these steps to mark and return to a specific location on a tape. 1. If the clock appears on the VCR's display, press CLOCK/COUNTER on the remote control to display the VCR's counter. 2. During playback, press RESET on the remote control at the location you want to return to. The counter displays 0:00:00. 3. Before you return to the selected location, press MEMORY so M appears on the display. 4. When you want to return to the marked location, press STOP then press << REWIND or FAST-F >>. The tape rewinds or fast-forwards and automatically stops at the location where you reset the counter to 0:00:00. NOTE: The counter uses special signals on a recorded tape. Therefore, the counter does not work with blank tape or blank portions of partially recorded tapes. Tracking Control For the best possible picture, the VCR automatically adjusts tracking each time you load a cassette. Depending on the quality of the tape, the automatic tracking system might not work well. In this case, you can manually adjust the tracking. Follow this procedure to manually adjust tracking. During playback, press and hold down CHANNEL/TRACKING (CHANNEL on the VCR) \/ or /\ until you obtain the clearest picture. The tracking position indicators appear on the display. Within 3 seconds after you release the button, the tracking position indicators disappear and the clock or counter display reappears. the automatic tracking position indicators appear on the display.
