ADJUSTING THE SOUND Use the following information to adjust the sound to suit your listening preferences. Adjusting the Balance The BALANCE control lets you adjust the balance between the left and right speakers. If your speakers are properly positioned and your listening area is centered between the speakers, the BALANCE control's center setting is usually best. To adjust the balance for unusual speaker placements, listen to a mon- aural sound source, such as AM radio. Then, adjust BALANCE until the sound seems to be coming from the point halfway between the two speakers. Adjusting the Bass and Treble Adjust the Bass control to increase or decrease low sounds such as those from a bass drum or bass guitar. Adjust the Treble control to increase or decrease high sounds such as those from a violin, piccolo, or cymbals. Using the Loudness Control At low volume levels, ears are less sensitive to bass and treble sounds. To boost the bass and treble sounds at low volume levels. press LOUDNESS so that LOUDNESS appears on the display. To cancel the loudness feature, press LOUDNESS again so that LOUDNESS disappears from display. RECORDING A TAPE If you connect a tape deck to the receiver as described in "Connecting Sound Sources," you can record from one of the other sound sources. Press AM, FM, PHONO, or CD/AUX to select the sound source you want to record from. Then, begin recording. See your tape deck's owner's manual for details. USING HEADPHONES To connect headphones, insert the 1/4-inch plug of a pair of low-impedance stereo headphones (not supplied) into the receiver's PHONES jack. The speakers are automatically silenced when you connect headphones. To listen from the speakers again, unplug the headphones. Warnings: To prevent possible ear injury and hearing loss, turn VOLUME to 0 before you put on headphones. After you put on the headphones, adjust VOLUME for a comfortable listening level. Do not listen at extremely high volume levels, especially when using headphones. Extended, high-volume listening can lead to permanent hearing loss. (LB/all-08/23/94)
