Choosing a Location for Your Speakers For the best sound quality, place each speaker on either side of the receiver, at equal distance from the receiver. You can separate the speakers up to the distance permitted by the length of the speaker cords. To increase the bass, place the speakers on the floor in the corners of your room or against the wall. To decrease the bass, move the speakers slightly away from the corners, pull them out from the wall a little, or raise them 6 to 18 inches (15 to 45 cm) off the floor. Avoid placing your speakers directly on top of thick carpet. Caution: Use only the speakers supplied with this product. Use of any other, or additional, speakers can damage your audio equipment. Never operate your system with the speakers disconnected. CONNECTING THE AM LOOP ANTENNA To listen to AM programs, you must connect the supplied rectangular AM loop antenna. Press the terminal tabs labeled AM LOOP ANT on the back of the music system. Insert the AM loop antenna wires into the AM LOOP ANT terminals, then release the tabs to engage the wires. Position the antenna for the best reception. Notes: To avoid noise or interference, do not place the antenna near a power source or speaker cord. For best reception, install the loop antenna away from the wall. CONNECTING THE FM ANTENNA The supplied FM antenna is usually adequate for FM reception. If FM reception is weak, disconnect the FM antenna and install an outdoor antenna. Your local Radio Shack store sells a complete line of outdoor antennas and accessories. Press and hold down the FM ANT 75ohms terminal tabs on the back of the system. Insert the stripped ends of the supplied antenna's wires into the holes, then release the tabs. Note: If connecting an external antenna, use 300ohm twin lead and insert it into the FM ANT 300ohm terminal. Position the antenna for the best reception. CONNECTING OTHER AUDIO EQUIPMENT You can connect a tuner, cassette deck, or other auxiliary audio source to the AUX jacks on the back of your stereo system. CONNECTING AC POWER After you complete all the connections, insert the AC plug into a standard AC outlet. The green POWER indicator lights to indicate that the power is connected. USING HEADPHONES If you want to listen in privacy, insert the 1/4" plug of a pair of low impedance stereo headphones (not supplied) into the PHONES jack on the front left side of the system. The speakers automatically disconnect. Your local Radio Shack store sells a wide selection of headphones. Listening Safely To protect your hearing, follow these guidelines when you use headphones. Set the volume to the lowest setting before you begin listening. After you begin listening, adjust the volume to a comfortable level. Do not listen at extremely high volume levels. Extended high volume listening can lead to permanent hearing loss. Once you set the volume, do not increase it. Over time, your ears adapt to the volume level, so a volume level that does not cause discomfort might still damage your hearing. INSTALLING THE REMOTE CONTROL'S BATTERIES The remote control requires two AAA batteries (not supplied) for power. For longest life, we recommend alkaline batteries such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-555. Follow these steps to install the batteries. 1. Slide the battery compartment cover in the direction of the arrow. 2. Insert two AAA batteries in the compartment, as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked in the compartment. 3. Replace the cover. Note: If the remote control does not work or operates erratically, replace both batteries. (br/all-9/30/94)
