System 711 (130-1256) Operation Faxback Doc. # 8823 USING THE REMOTE CONTROL The remote control buttons have identical functions to the similarly marked buttons on the main system. In addition, the remote control has a MUTE button and a PRESET button. MUTE lets you temporarily switch off the sound. Press MUTE once to turn off the sound; press MUTE again to restore the sound. PRESET lets you recall any one of the preset stations stored in the tuner memory. Point the remote control toward the INFRARED REMOTE sensor on the front panel of the main system. There should be a clear path between the transmitter and the sensor. The remote control works up to a distance of 6 meters and within a 30 degree angle from left to right. Weak batteries or direct sunlight on the INFRARED REMOTE sensor might reduce the operating range of the remote control. Caution: If you are not going to use the remote control for an extended period of time, remove its batteries. Weak batteries can leak damaging chemicals. BASIC OPERATION Your music system's amplifier and frequency equalizer work with all of its audio sources. Follow these steps to operate the music system. 1. To turn on the music system, press POWER on the from left side of the system. The green standby LED indicator on the POWER button turns off. and the tuner's display lights. 2. Press one of the FUNCTION buttons to select the audio source. 3. Adjust the VOLUME, FREQUENCY EQUALIZER, and BALANCE controls as desired. USING THE E-BASS (EXTENDED-BASS) BUTTON To enhance the bass frequencies, press E-BASS in. To resume normal sound, press E-BASS out. USING THE FREQUENCY EQUALIZER Adjust the THREE BAND STEREO FREQUENCY EQUALIZER slide controls to customize the sound to your listening preference. You can adjust the tone in three narrow frequency ranges. Slide the control up to boost the indicated frequency range; slide it down to cut the frequency. Setting the control to the center position transmits the frequency unchanged. 100 Hz - Adjusts frequencies in the low bass range (low organ notes and bass drums). Reduces rumble or other low-frequency aberrations. 1 kHz - Adjusts frequencies where the ear is most sensitive (vocals). 10 kHz - Adjusts the brilliance of the music (cymbals, wind sounds, and other high frequency sounds.) USING THE TUNER You can select stations using manual, automatic, or preset tuning. Manual Tuning 1. Press POWER to turn on the power. 2. Press TUNER. 3. Press BAND to select the AM or FM band. 4. Press TUNING DOWN or UP to change the frequency. Hold down the tuning button for fast tuning. Automatic Tuning You can use automatic tuning to move up or down to the next available station in your area. 1. Follow steps 1-3 in "Manual Tuning". 2. Press AUTO on the tuner. AUTO appears on the display. 3. Press TUNING DOWN or UP. The tuner automatically scans down or up the band and stops at the next available station. 4. Adjust the VOLUME, BALANCE, and FREQUENCY EQUALIZER controls as desired. Preset Tuning You can store up to 24 different stations (8 each in FM P1, FM P2, and AM) in the tuner and recall them with the touch of a button. Note: FM P1 holds FM memory locations 1-8; FM P2 holds FM memory locations 9-16. Follow these steps to store a station. 1. Select the station you want to store using manual or automatic tuning. 2. To store a station in AM or FM P1, press and release MEMORY. ME and P1 appear. To store a station in FM P2, press MEMORY twice. ME and P2 appear. 3. While P1 or P2 appears, press a MEMORY STATION number button (M1-M8). The station will be stored in the selected memory location. Follow these steps to recall a preset station. 1. Select the desired band. 2. To select a station stored in AM or FM P1, press and hold its corresponding MEMORY STATION number button. To select a station stored in FM P2, press and hold its MEMORY STATION button for about 1 second. Note: If you unplug the system or if the power is off for more than one week, you must store the stations in the system's memory again. USING THE CASSETTE DECK Selecting the correct type of tape is crucial for best performance. Use only normal bias (ferric) tapes for recording on this cassette deck. See "Tape Tips and Techniques." PLAYING A CASSETTE TAPE 1. Press POWER to turn on your music system. 2. Press TAPE. TAPE appears. 3. Press STOP/EJECT on either TAPE ONE or TAPE TWO. The cassette compartment door opens. 4. Load a pre-recorded cassette with the open end down and the full reel to the left, and the side you want to play facing you. Gently close the cassette compartment door. 5. Press PLAY. 6. When the tape reaches the end, the selected buttons pop up and the tape motor automatically stops. To stop the tape sooner, press STOP/EJECT. Press the button again to open the casette compartment door so you can remove the cassette. Note: To prevent damage to your cassette or your cassette deck, never leave a cassette in the cassette compartment when the cassette deck is not in use. Fast-Forward and Rewind Press FAST-F to rapidly advance a tape. Press REWIND to quickly rewind a tape. When the tape reaches the desired point, press STOP/EJECT. Caution: To avoid damaging the tape, do not go directly from rewind to fast-forward or from fast-forward to rewind without pressing STOP/EJECT. Consecutive Play You can program your music system to play one side of a pre-recorded cassette in TAPE ONE immediately followed by one side of a pre-recorded cassette in TAPE TWO. 1. Press POWER to turn on the music system. Then press TAPE. 2. Load the cassettes you want to play into TAPE ONE and TAPE TWO. Then close the cassette compartments. 3. Press PLAY on TAPE ONE. Then press PAUSE and PLAY on TAPE TWO. When the tape in TAPE ONE ends, the tape automatically stops and the cassette in TAPE TWO begins to play. The tape motor automatically stops when the tape in TAPE TWO reaches its end. RECORDING FROM THE TUNER OR A CD You can make a tape recording from the tuner or from a CD onto a cassette tape. 1. Press POWER to turn on the system. 2. Press CD or TUNER for the source you want to record from. 3. Load the cassette you want to record on into TAPE TWO and press PAUSE. Then press RECORD and PLAY. Caution: Never attempt to force down RECORD. If your cassette's erase protection tabs have been removed, you cannot press RECORD. (See "Tape Tips and Techniques.") 4. After you start the desired audio source, press PAUSE on TAPE TWO to begin recording. (See "Loading and Playing Compact Discs" to operate the CD changer.) 5. To temporarily stop recording, press PAUSE. Press PAUSE again to resume recording. 6. When the recording is complete, press STOP/EJECT on TAPE TWO twice to stop and eject the tape. Notes: It is not necessary to adjust VOLUME because the built-in Automatic Level Control (ALC) will keep recording at an optimum level. Do not use the TAPE ONE cassette deck while recording from a CD or the tuner on TAPE TWO. DUBBING Use the following steps to dub (copy) from one cassette to another. 1. Press POWER to turn on the music system. 2. Press TAPE. The TAPE indicator lights. Note: To record in half the normal recording time, press HI-SPEED DUBBING at the extreme right of the unit. 3. Load the cassette you want to copy from in TAPE ONE. 4. Load the cassette you want to record on into TAPE TWO. 5. Press PAUSE on TAPE TWO. Then press RECORD and PLAY on TAPE TWO. 6. Press PLAY on TAPE ONE. PAUSE on TAPE TWO automatically releases and recording starts. The program on the cassette in TAPE ONE records onto the cassette in TAPE TWO. 7. To temporarily stop recording, press PAUSE on TAPE TWO. To resume recording, press PAUSE again. 8. To stop recording, press STOP/EJECT on TAPE TWO. USING THE COMPACT DISC CHANGER Your music system's compact disc changer lets you play three 3 1/2 or 5-1/2 inch CDs with the touch of a button, and lets you program the order in which they play. HANDLING COMPACT DISCS Even though a compact disc is more durable than a record, you should handle it with care. Always hold the CD by its edges. In extreme cases, fingerprints and scratches on the disc's surface can prevent the laser from correctly reading the digital information. Always keep the disc in its protective case when you are not playing it. LOADING AND PLAYING COMPACT DISCS Follow these steps to load and play a compact disc. 1. Press POWER. 2. Press CD. The CD display shows 1 2 3 00:00. 3. Lift the CD cover. 4. With the label side up, carefully place the CDs (up to three discs) in the recessed disc tray(s). Note: To load the third CD, press DISC SKIP on the CD changer to rotate the disc turntable. Caution: Do not put more than one CD in each disc tray. 5. Press DISC SKIP to rotate the disc to be played to the laser beam housing. The CD automatically starts playing from track 1. The disc 123 flashes on the display, and the track number and elapsed play time appear. 6. Close the CD cover. 7. If you want to temporarily stop play, press PLAY PAUSE RIGHT (ARROW II on the remote control). II appears on the display. To resume play, press PLAY/PAUSE again. 8. The CD changer automatically plays all the discs loaded in the tray. To stop play before the last disc ends, press STOP. REPEAT PLAY You can repeat a single track, an entire disc, or all the discs loaded in the tray. To repeat a track, press REPEAT before or during play until REPEAT 1 appears on the display. At the end of the track, the CD changer replays the track. To repeat a disc, press REPEAT before or during play until REPEAT DISC appears on the display. At the end of the CD, the CD changer replays all the loaded CDs in order. To cancel the repeat mode, press STOP or keep pressing REPEAT until none of the REPEAT displays appear. USING THE TIME BUTTON To see how much time is left on the current track, press TIME. The display shows the track being played and the remaining time on the track. To see how much time is left on an entire CD, press TIME again. The disc's indicator on the left of the display flashes, and the remaining time on the entire CD appears. To cancel the remaining time display, keep pressing TIME until the remaining time disappears. OTHER FEATURES Automatic Search Music System (ASMS) You can use the ASMS feature while a CD is playing to quickly locate the beginning of any track on the CD, including the track currently playing. 1. Press ASMS LEFT ARROW once to skip back to the beginning of the current track. Press ASMS RIGHT ARROW once to skip ahead to the beginning of the next track. 2. To skip more than one track, continue to press ASMS LEFT ARROW or RIGHT ARROW until you reach the desired track. You can also use this feature to select a starting track other than Track 1. 1. While a CD is not playing, press ASMS LEFT ARROW or RIGHT ARROW to choose a starting track. The track number appears. 2. Press PLAY/PAUSE. The play indicator (RIGHT ARROW) and the selected track number appear. The selected track plays. Programming Tracks This feature allows you to program up to 32 tracks on three CDs to play in any order you choose. 1. Turn POWER on. If you have already turned on the power and a CD is playing, press STOP. 2. Press PROGRAM on the CD changer. The disc tray indicator on the left of the display appears and PROGRAM and OP-01 appear. The flashing disc in the tray indicator is the disc to be programmed. 3. To select a different CD to be programmed, press DISC SKIP until the desired disc number flashes. 4. Press ASMS LEFT ARROW or RIGHT ARROW until the display shows the track number you want to play first. 5. Press PROGRAM to store the displayed track number in the first memory position. When PROGRAM OP-02 appears, the CD player is ready to store the second programmed track. 6. Repeat Steps 3-5 to program other CDs and tracks. Note: The highest track number you can store from a single disc is 20. If you try to program more than 32 tracks, FULL appears until you press PLAY/PAUSE or clear the program. 7. To play the programmed sequence, press PLAY/PAUSE. The disc turntable rotates the CDs and plays the tracks in the order you programmed. PROGRAM appears, and the track number and track time of the current track displays. Note: During programmed play, you can skip forward or backward in the order you programmed by pressing ASMS RIGHT ARROW or LEFT ARROW. 8. To stop play, press STOP. To replay the program sequence, press PROGRAM then PLAY/PAUSE. To clear the program, press STOP and PROGRAM at the same time. Note: Turning the power off also clears the entire memory. Intro Skip Press INTRO on the CD changer to play the first 10 seconds of each successive track. The track numbers flash. To cancel this function, press INTRO; to STOP play, press STOP. Time-Edit Play for Recording Cassette Tapes Time-edit play sets the CD changer to edit its playing time to match the recording time of different length tapes. To edit playing time, follow these steps. 1. Press POWER to turn on the power. 2. Press CD. CD appears on the display. 3. Load a CD and press DISC SKIP to rotate the desired disc to the laser beam housing. 123 appears. 4. Press STOP to stop play so you can enter the edit mode. 5. Press EDIT. The tray number of the disc in the laser beam housing flashes and EDIT 46:00 appears. The CD player is set to play about 23 minutes for recording one side of a C-46 tape. To edit the CD playing time to record a different length tape, press ASMS RIGHT ARROW or LEFT ARROW to change the desired edit time to 54:00, 60:00, or 90:00 for recording on C-54, C-60, or C-90 tapes, respectively. Notes: The playing time for the 46:00 setting is near 23 minutes, for 54:00 is near 27 minutes, for 60:00 is near 30 minutes, and for 90:00 is near 45 minutes (which equals the playing time on one side of a tape.) To adjust the minutes, press SEARCH LEFT ARROW or RIGHT ARROW to display changes from 1:00 to 99:00. You cannot adjust by seconds. The edit time must be longer than the playing time of the first track. 6. When the selected edit-time displays, press EDIT again. A and the playing time on one side of the tape appears. The CD changer is in the pause mode. 7. Load the tape you want to record on into TAPE TWO, then press PAUSE and RECORD then PLAY. 8. Press PLAY/PAUSE on the CD changer to start playing the CD. Release PAUSE on TAPE TWO to begin recording. 9. When all time-edited tracks finish playing, the CD changer pauses. To continue recording the CD on side B of the tape, turn the tape over and repeat Steps 7-8. 10. To cancel the EDIT function, press STOP. EDIT disappears. Random Play You can set the CD changer to play tracks at random. Before or during play, press RANDOM. RANDOM appears on the display. The CD changer randomly selects and plays a sequence of tracks from all three CDs. After each track plays, the CD changer advances to the next CD and plays the next track in the sequence. Note: If only one CD is loaded, the CD changer advances to look for other CDs then continues to randomly select tracks from that CD only. After the CD changer plays all the tracks, it stops and RANDOM disappears from the display. To cancel random play before all tracks play, press RANDOM again or STOP. RANDOM disappears from the display. Pause/Cue If you want to temporarily stop play, press PLAY/PAUSE. Press PLAY/PAUSE again to resume play. You can also use PLAY/PAUSE to cue a track to select it for immediate play at a later time. 1. When no CD is playing, select the track you want to cue. 2. Press PLAY/PAUSE twice to enter the pause mode. The pause indicator II appears. This cues the selected track. 3. When you are ready to begin play, press PLAY/PAUSE once to exist the pause mode. The cued track starts immediately. You can also use the ASMS function to cue a track while in the pause mode. 1. During play, press PLAY/PAUSE to enter the pause mode. 2. Use ASMS LEFT ARROW or RIGHT ARROW to select the track you want to cue. 3. To start the cued track, press PLAY/PAUSE. Audible Search Use this feature during play to search forward or backward on a disc. To search forward, press and hold SEARCH RIGHT ARROW during play. You hear the CD at a faster speed and a lower volume. Release SEARCH RIGHT ARROW to resume normal play. Note: You can search forward through the final track on a disc to the first track on the next disc, but you cannot search backward past the first track to the last track on the previous disc. Operating Auxiliary Components If you have another audio source, such as a cassette deck, tuner, VCR or a TV with audio outputs, you can play it through your music system. Caution: If you turn up the volume when using a turntable, be sure to turn it down before switching to another function, such as the tuner. 1. Press PHONO/AUX. 2. Turn on the external source, and play it as you normally would. Adjust the sound controls on the music system. (br/all-9/30/94)
