CT-1055/1050 (170-1007/1021) Basic Phone Operation Faxback Doc. # 8867 TURNING THE PHONE ON AND OFF To turn on the phone, press and hold down "PWR" for about 1 second. When the power comes on, the phone displays RADIO SHACK and sounds a tone. After a few seconds, the cellular telephone system's identification (for example, NYC for New York City) and your telephone number appears for several seconds. The normal display then appears (the system indicator depends on the cellular system selected). The no service indicator NSVC turns off when service is available. If it remains on, the phone is either not in a cellular service area or the system priority is incorrectly set. See "Setting the Cellular System Provider". (Faxback Doc. # 8861) The phone indicates the incoming signal strength by turning on squares on the display: Six squares = strong signal. One square = poor signal. The signal strength is also indicated by the green "SIG" indicator: Steady = Strong signal. Flashing = Moderate-to-weak signal. Not illuminated = Very weak or no signal. To turn off the phone, press and hold "PWR" until you hear a confirmation tone. MAKING A CALL Follow these steps to make a call using your cellular phone: 1. Make sure the phone is turned on, the phone lock is disabled (see "Locking the Phone"), and the antenna is properly attached. 2. Enter the number you want to call by pressing the appropriate keys. You can enter up to 32 digits. If you enter more than 16 digits, the display alternates between the last 16 digits of the number and the remaining digits. For example, if you enter 19 digits, the display shows the last 16 digits and then the first three digits. NOTE: Be sure to include the area code if you are making a long distance call. 3. Confirm that the displayed number is correct. If it is not, press "CLR" or "END", then redial the number. 4. Press and hold down "SND" until you hear the acknowledgement tone. The CALL indicator turns on when the phone begins to dial. After a few seconds, the in-calls display appears, indicating that the number was successfully dialed. You hear the ringing tone from the handset speaker. If a call attempt is unsuccessful, the phone sounds an error tone, the CALL light remains off, and the normal display returns. If the call goes through, when the other party answers the call, lift the handset and speak, or, if you are using the hands-free mode, just speak toward the hands-free microphone. The elapsed call time appears throughout the call in minutes and seconds. After 60 minutes. The displayed call time is a guide only, and does not indicate actual network billing. If the SYSTEM BUSY message appears when you try to make a call, then the cellular system is currently too busy to accept your call. You can redial the call by pressing "SND", or by using the timed auto redial functions (see "Timed Auto Redial"). CORRECTING ENTRY ERRORS If you make a mistake while entering a number, press "CLR" to clear the last digit or press and hold "CLR" to rapidly clear digits. Then enter the correct number. You can also press "END" to clear all digits and return the phone to the normal display. ENDING A CALL Press and hold down "END" until the acknowledgement tone is heard, then hang up. The elapsed call time appears for a few seconds. The normal display then returns. DIALING EMERGENCY SERVICES You can dial 911 at any time, even if you have turned on one of the security features, provided the cellular coverage is good in the area you are calling from. TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY CALL: 1. Stop and note your location. 2. If the telephone is off, press and hold "PWR". 3. Dial 911 then press "SND". 4. Explain the nature of the emergency to the operator. Include the location, nature of injuries, and any other requested information. 5. Your mobile telephone might be the only means of communication at the scene. Do not end the call until the emergency operator says you may do so. MUTING THE MICROPHONE DURING A CALL You can mute the microphone to obtain privacy during a call by pressing and holding down "PWR". This does not turn off power during a call. Release "PWR" to continue your conversation. CALLING HINTS -As with any cellular telephone, you will experience difficulty if you try to make or receive calls in areas of low signal strength. -Do not try to make calls when outside the cellular coverage area, or when in underground locations, metal structures or elevators. USING TONE SERVICES To access computer services such as alternate long-distance or bank-by- phone you can either dial directly or use memory dialing (see "Memory Dialing"). If you dial a number while a call is already in progress, the phone produces a touch tone for each key press. Begin by calling the computer service's telephone number. When the service answers, manually dial any additional numbers. You can also store the computer service's telephone number in one memory location and the additional numbers in another, then, memory dial them both. You can change the type of touch tone produced by the phone from standard- length to continuous tones (the phone sends tones as long as you hold down each button). Standard-length tones should make the computer respond correctly, but some systems require continuous tones. To select the length of the touch tones, press "SEL", "SEL", "#5" to display the current tone length. To select the other option (see below) press "SEL" until the desired option appears. DTMF STD means the phone produces standard-length tones, DTMF CONT produces continuous tones. Press "END" to set the option and return to the normal display. TIMED AUTO REDIAL You can set your phone to redial a number after a preset time delay between one minute and four hours after the call attempt. The phone sounds a tone when it begins redialing. Follow these steps to use timed auto redial. 1. Press "SEL", MNO6". The current status of the function appears. 2. Press "SEL". The phone displays ENTER TIME. Enter the length of the delay (from 1 to 240 minutes), then press "SEL". NOTE: The phone does not display the time as you enter it. To cancel the function, press "SEL" then "END". 3. To return to normal operation with a time delay set, press "END". To review the time remaining before redial occurs, press "SEL" "MNO6". To reset the timer, repeat steps 1-3. (smc-03/03/94)
