Infrasonic Alarm (490-0825) Installation Faxback Doc. # 8885 Caution: This Mobile Alert alarm system is designed for use only in vehicles with 12-volt, negative-ground electrical systems. Most vehicles have a negative-ground electrical system, but to be sure, check with your vehicle dealer. If you are unsure about how to install or wire the system, we recommend that you have a qualified installer do it for you. Carefully read the entire installation section before you begin to install the alarm system. SELECTING A MOUNTING LOCATION Usually, the best place to mount the alarm receiver is under the dashboard away from heating and air-conditioning vents. Place the alarm receiver near the proposed mounting location, but do not mount the receiver until you make all other connections. MOUNTING AN OPTIONAL SIREN Note: Some areas have laws that restrict the use of a siren in a car. Check your local laws before you connect a siren. Select a location under the hood to mount the siren. For reliable operation, mount the siren where it is not exposed to water or extreme heat. Your local Radio Shack store sells a variety of external sirens. Securely attach the siren to the interior wall of the engine compartment. If necessary, start the screw holes by drilling two 1/8-inch pilot holes into the mounting surface. Be careful not to drill into any wires or other important parts behind the mounting surface. Refer to the siren's owner's manual for mounting details. After you mount the siren, select a location for the wiring hole. Many vehicles have pre-drilled holes for this purpose. If there are no pre-drilled holes, drill a 1/4-inch hole through the firewall. Be careful not to drill through any mechanisms or wiring. After you drill the hole, route the siren's wires through the hole and to the mounting location in the vehicle's interior. Before you start to make connections, remove the three screws and the connector compartment cover on the bottom of the alarm receiver. CONNECTING THE ALARM RECEIVER TO POWER To connect the alarm receiver to power, connect one end of the supplied red wire to the receiver's BATTERY (+) terminal. Then, connect the other end of the wire (with the fuse holder) to a continuous source of 12 VDC power, such as a terminal in the vehicle's fuse box that has power even when the ignition is turned off. A beep sounds from the main siren and external siren when you connect the receiver to power. After you complete all of the connections, replace the connector compartment cover and screws. CONNECTING AN EXTERNAL SIREN Connect the siren's positive (+) wire to the receiver's EXT SIREN (+) terminal. Connect the siren's negative (-) wire to the receiver's EXT SIREN (-) terminal. GROUNDING THE ALARM RECEIVER A solid ground connection is important for the proper operation of the alarm system. Connect one end of the supplied black wire to the receiver's BATTERY (-) terminal. Then, connect the other end of the wire to a clean, metal screw attached to your vehicle's metal frame or firewall, or directly to the battery's negative (-) terminal. Caution: Do not connect the wire to a metal part that is insulated from the frame by a plastic part. Note: The ground wire also serves as an antenna for the system. For best results, fully extended the wire. (SMC/jlc-03/22/94)
