TRC-493 (210-1590) Problem Solving Faxback Doc. # 8901 If you have problems with your CB, check the following information to help you solve the problem. If the CB has trouble receiving, be sure: * The transceiver's power is on. * CB/PA is set to CB. * SQUELCH is properly adjusted. * The transceiver is turned to an operating channel. * The microphone connection is secure. * The antenna connection is secure. * VOLUME is properly adjusted. * RF GAIN is properly adjusted. If the CB has trouble transmitting, be sure: * The transceiver's power is on. * CB/PA is set to CB. * You are pressing the talk button all the way in. * The transceiver is turned to an operating channel. * The microphone connection is secure. * The antenna connection is secure. * All connectors are clean and tight. If you cannot select a channel, be sure: * CB/PA is set to CB. * OUT/CH9 is set to OUT. * You are not pressing the talk button. If the sound is distorted, be sure: * RF GAIN is properly adjusted. * TONE is properly adjusted. * The volume is not too loud. If the transceiver does not work at all, be sure: * The power connection is secure. * The fuse is good. If necessary, replace the fuse. If the PA function does not work be sure: * CB/PA is set to PA. * A PA speaker has been properly connected. * The volume is loud enough. REDUCING NOISE Your transceiver is designed to operate quietly. However, if you hear any noise during operation, it is probably caused by an external source in your vehicle, such as the ignition, another transceiver, or the vehicle's spark plugs. The transceiver uses an ANL (Automatic Noise Limiter) circuit and a DSP (Digital Sound Processor) circuit to reduce noise. However, if possible, try to eliminate the noise by finding its source. To determine the source of the noise, turn off the engine and operate the transceiver with the ignition set to ACC. If most of the noise goes away, it is probably caused by your vehicle's ignition or electrical system. Otherwise, the noise is probably caused by other electrical equipment or another CB transceiver. These hints can help you reduce or eliminate the noise. * Make all CB power and antenna wires as short as possible. * Route the power wires away from the antenna wires. * Be sure the ground connection (black wire) is secure. * Replace old ignition wires with new, high-voltage, noise-suppression wires. * Install noise suppressors on your spark plugs, or install new spark plugs that have built-in suppressors. If the noise continues, check your regulator, alternator/generator, and gauges. You can reduce electrical noise from these sources by using bypass capacitors at the various output voltage points. Your Radio Shack store has a wide selection of noise-suppression accessories. (RLR-01\31\94)
