Plug-N-Power/X-10 Compatibility Issues Faxback Doc. # 8906 Although all X-10 products and private brand versions are 100% compatible, there can be some confusion arising from compatibility issues related dif- ferent product groups (Home Automation vs. Security products, etc.). The following should help clarify this. 1. X-10's Universal Module (Modem UM506) is identical to Radio Shack's Sounder/Actuator Module Cat. No. 61-2688 CMC. Both modules do NOT re- spond to "All Lights On" and so will NOT work with ANY X-10 or Plug 'n Power Security System. Some confusion can arise because Radio Shack's literature for the 61-2688 CMC says it can be used to trip an autodial- er. This can be true because many auto-dialers can be tripped by a con- tact closure and the UM506/61-2688 CMC does give a contact closure. The UM506/61-2688 CMC could be activated by a powerline signal from some other kind of security system and in turn tip a dialer, but it CANNOT be activated by the All Lights On signal transmitted by X-10 and Plug 'n Power Security Systems. 2. Most security panels have an output which give a a contact closure to trip a dialer or remote siren, etc. This contact closure could be used to trigger the Burglar Alarm Interface PF284 (R.S. Universal Interface Cat. No. 61-2687 CMC). This contact closure could cause the interface to send a specific Unit Code signal to trip the UM506/61-2688 CMC, which in turn could activate a dialer or low voltage siren at a remote location. Remember this is for "other" security panels, not X-10 or Plug 'n Power Security Systems (which transmit All Lights On). 3. X-10/Plug 'n Power Wireless Remote Controls send radio frequency (RF) signals to a plug-in base which re-transmits the signals over the house wiring to control lights and appliances connected to X-10/Plug 'n Power modules. In general, all Home Automation (H.A.) Remote Controls work with any H.A. base or any Security System Base, but there are some spe- cific points that may need clarification (see 4, 5, and 6 below): 4. Model RT504 (61-2560) works with its own base, RR501 (61-2608 CMC). The RT504 and RR501 are packaged together as model RC5000 (61-2676). To control 16 modules, you need two RR501 bases: one set to 1-8, and the other set to 9-16. 5. The RT504 also works with base, model TM751. This base re-transmits all 16 X-10 codes so that you do not need two bases (like you do with the RR501). The TM751 base is part of the 2-piece kit, RC6500, which in- cludes the TM751 and the 2-Button Remote Control KC674 (61-2565). Radio Shack's Cat. No. for the RC6500 is 61-2663. 6. The RT504 also works with any X-10 or Plug 'n Power Security System base and (like the TM751 base) the security system base will pass through all 16 X-10 codes. So, if you own an X-10 or Plug 'n Power Security System, you don't need an RR501 or TM751 in order to use the RT504. 7. Wireless Wall Switches are normally packaged with the TM751, which pas- ses through all codes from the Wireless Wall Switches onto the power line to control X-10 modules. You can also use the Wireless Wall Swit- ches with any X-10 or Plug 'n Power Security System instead of the TM751. 8. You can use the Wireless Wall Switches with the RR501, but there are some caveats (see 9, 10, and 11, below). 9. The 2-button version, RW684 (61-2562 CMC) will only work on position 1-2 with the RR501 set to 1-8, or position 9-10 with the RR501 set to 9-16. It will not work with the RW684 set to 5-8 or 13-14. 10. The 4-button version, RW694 (61-2664 CMC) will only work on position 1-4 with the RR501 set to 1-8, or position 9-12 with the RR501 set to 9-16. It will not work with the RW694 set to 5-8 or 13-16. 11. The 3-button version, RW724 (61-2563 CMC) will only work on position 1-3 with the RR501 set to 1-8, or position 9-11 with the RR501 set to 9-16. It will not work with the RW724 set to 5-7 or 13-15. 12. The 2-button Keychain Remote Control, KC674 (612565), is normally pack- aged with the TM751 and sold as the RC6500 (61-2663). The KC674 will also work with any X-10 or Plug 'n Power Security System. It will also work with the RR501 with the same restrictions as the 2-Button Wireless Wall Switch; i.e., it will only work on position 1-2 with the RR501 set to 1-8, or position 9-10 with the RR501 set to 9-16. It will not work with the RR684 set to 5-8 or 13-14. In general, the Wireless Wall Switches and KC684 have more utility when used with either the TM751 base or any X-10 or Plug 'n Power Security System base. 13. The Security System Remotes (HT544/61-2615 CMC,KF574/61-2618 CMC, SH624/61-2561 CMC) are primarily used to arm the security system. They can also control lights and appliances connected to X-10 modules by passing signals through the security system base onto the power line. They will not work with the H.A. bases (RR501 and TM751). 14. The new version of the Wireless Passive Infrared Motion Detector, SP554A (61-2614A CMC), has a home/away switch which lets you arm the system without or with motion detectors armed. This new feature requires the new voice dialer security system base PS561 (61-2609R) or the new base BR521A (61-2611A-R). If you use an old base BR521 (61-2611-R), you must set the SP554A to the NORMAL position (not Home/Away). To arm the new base in the Home or Away mode, you need the new Remote Control SH624 (61-2561 CMC). If you use the SP554A with a new base but arm the system with an older remote that doesn't have the Home/Away feature, the system will always arm in the Away mode. 15. Heavy Duty 220V Appliance Modules HD243/61-2668 CMC (15A) and HD245/ 61-2669 CMC (20A) are designed to work on single, split phase 120/240V house wiring. Some apartment buildings have 3 phase wiring, and even though only 2 of these phases may be present in each apartment, these two phases are from a 3-phase 120/208V system. There is a 30 degree phase shift between zero crossing points of 120V and 208V in a 3-phase system. X-10 signals are transmitted at the zero crossing point of the 120V AC power line, therefore in a 3-phase system, there is no signal present at the zero crossing point of the 208V line (phase to phase). The Heavy Duty 220V Appliance Modules therefore will NOT work on a 3- phase system, which quite frequently translates to "they will not work in apartments." 16. The Smart RF Repeater, model SR731 (61-2567), will work with all 310 MHz X-10 and Plug 'n Power security and Home Automation products. It will not work with the Powermid products (PM5900/15-1959, ST539/15-1959T, RE549/15-1959R) which work at 412 MHz. (smc-03/03/94)
