Remote Control (490-0875) Install the Control Module Faxback Doc. # 8909 Alarm System To install this system, you must be familiar with your vehicle's wiring system. For example, you must be able to identify the following: * Accessory Terminal with + 12 Volts * Chassis Ground * Power Antenna Wire * Parking Light Power Wire * Constant + 12 Volts * Door Switches * Starter Solenoid If necessary, contact your vehicle's dealer for wiring information. Before installing the alarm system, carefully read this section. If you are unsure about any part of the installation process, we advice you to have a professional install the system. Cautions: Be sure your vehicle has a 12-volt DC, negative-ground electrical system. If it does not, or if you are not sure, have a professional install your alarm system. For safety and protection of your alarm system, disconnect the negative terminal's cable on your vehicle's battery before you begin. The Mobile Alert System includes a main control module, a siren, a starter disable module, a wiring harness, two keychain remote transmitters, a pager, and an indicator module. The control module mounts in the interior of your vehicle for easy acces- sibility. From this location, wires lead to the indicator module on the dashboard and the siren and starter disable module in the engine compartment. The starter disable module also has wires connecting it to the starter solenoid. The wiring harness' six wires connect the control module to the vehicle's door switches, points in your vehicle's fuse block, and the hood and trunk pin switches. SELECT A LOCATION FOR THE CONTROL MODULE Select a location inside your vehicle for the control module, such as under the dashboard or in the trunk. Be sure all wires are long enough to reach the control module. Place the control module near the proposed mounting location, but do not mount it until you have made all other connections. Caution: Do not install the control module directly in the path of the heater or air-conditioner vents. CONNECT THE POWER HARNESS The power harness consists of the red wire with in-line fuse and the small black wire. Place the socket end of the power harness next to the control module and route the wires from this location. CONNECT POWER Connect the power harness' red wire to a continuous source of 12 volts. You can connect it directly to the battery's positive terminal that has power even when the vehicle's ignition is off). GROUND THE CONTROL MODULE * Attach the power harness' black wire to a metal screw on the vehicle's frame or fire wall or directly to the battery's negative terminal. If necessary, use the supplied, small screw to connect the wire to the frame or fire wall. Be sure to clean the contact surface before you connect the ground wire. Note: If you connect the wire to a metal screw, be sure the screw is not insulated from the chassis by a plastic part. CONNECT THE SIX-WIRE HARNESS The six-harness connects the control module to the door switches, hood and trunk switches, the ignition, and power antennas. * Place the harness next to the control module and route each wire from this location to be sure each wire reaches from the control module's location to its connection point. Avoid sharp edges and moving parts. (SMC/jlc-03/22/94)
