Remote Control (490-0850) Installation Faxback Doc. # 8910 The Mobile Alert System includes a main control module, a starter disable module, a wiring harness, a keychain remote transmitter, and an indicator module. Before you install the system, read the entire installation section and decide where to mount the control module and its components and where to route all wiring. Be sure all the components' wires reach to the control module's location. These decisions might save you the time and effort of remounting and rerouting. As you install the system, place a check mark next to each step. The following overview can help you understand how the system works when properly installed. The control module mounts in the interior of your vehicle for easy accessibility. From this location, wires lead to the indicator module on the dashboard and the siren and starter disable module in the engine compartment. The starter disable module also has wires connecting it to the starter solenoid. The wiring harness' seven wires connect the control module to the vehicle battery's positive and negative terminals, the door switches, points in your vehicle's fuse block, and the hood and trunk pin switches. To install this system, you must be familiar with your vehicle's wiring system. For example, you must be able to identify the following: * + 12 Volts Ignition * Chassis Ground * Constant + 12 Volts * Door Switches * Starter Solenoid If necessary, contact your vehicle's dealer for wiring information. Before installing the alarm system, carefully read this section. If you are unsure about any part of the installation process, we advise you to have a professional install the system. Cautions: * Be sure your vehicle has a 12-volt DC, negative-ground electronic system. If it does not, or if you are not sure, have a professional install your alarm system. * For safety and protection of your alarm system, disconnect the negative (-) terminal's cable on your vehicle's battery before you begin. SELECT A LOCATION FOR THE CONTROL MODULE * Select a location inside your vehicle for the control module, such as under the dashboard or in your trunk. Be sure all wires are long enough to reach the control module. Place the control module near the proposed mounting location, but do not mount it until you have all other connections. Caution: Do not install the control module directly in the path of the heater or air-condition vents. CONNECT THE WIRING HARNESS The wiring harness connects the control module to chassis ground, 12-volt DC power, door, switches, hood and trunk switches, and the ignition. * Before connecting the wiring harness, place it next to the control module. Do, not connect it to the module at this time. Route each wire from this location. Be sure each wire reaches from the control module's location to its connection point. Avoid sharp edges and moving parts. CONNECT POWER * Connect the wiring harness red wire inline fuse to a continuous source of 12 volts. You can connect it directly to the battery's positive terminal or to a non-switched fuse terminal (a terminal that the vehicle's ignition does not turn on and off). GROUND THE CONTROL MODULE * Route the black wire from the wiring harness' location to a metal screw attached to the vehicle's frame or fire wall or directly to the battery's negative terminal. Be sure to clean the contact surface before you connect the ground wire. Note: If you connect the wire to a metal screw, be sure the screw is not insulated from the chassis by a plastic part. WIRE THE IGNITION LEAD * Route and connect the wiring harness' blue wire to the accessory (ACC) terminal in the fuse block. This connection provides 12 volts of power to the blue wire when you turn on the ignition, and turns off power when you turn off the ignition. (SMC/jlc-03/22/94)
