Wireless Home (490-2010) Optional Equipment Faxback Doc. # 8921 Alarm System You can add any combination of up to 16 wireless, transmitting, security devices to your alarm system. These devices include door/window transmitters, motion detectors, and smoke alarm siren detectors. Each device you add has its own zone. If you plan to add several devices to your system, we recommend you draw a simple floor plan of your home. Then mark and number the locations on the floor plan where you want to place the devices. After you complete the floor plan, follow the steps under "Adding a Transmitter or Smoke Alarm Siren Detector" (Faxback Doc. # 8920) to add the devices to the system and assign them to the desired zones. USING OTHER TYPES OF SENSORS You can use several other types of sensors for specific applications. Most of these sensors have either a built-in alarm sounder or you can connect them directly to an external siren or assign them to a zone in your alarm system. Two common types of sensors include a plunger switch and a motion detector. Note: If you connect a plunger switch or other interior sensor to the door/window transmitter, the base's alarm sounds when the system is violated while armed in the Home mode. PLUNGER SWITCH A plunger switch is designed to be installed inside a door frame on the side with the hinges. When the door is closed, the switch is in its normal state, which can be either open or closed. If someone opens the door, they trip the switch, which activates the alarm. You cannot see a plunger switch when the door is closed. You can also use a plunger switch on a basement window or sliding glass door. If you install a plunger switch on a door or window that is exposed to the weather, put silicone caulking under the switch's flange to protect the switch from water damage. Motion Detectors Motion Detectors are designed to detect motion in a specific area of your home. For Example, you might want to protect the area around a stereo system, a jewelry box, or a wall safe. The owner's manual for the detector usually provides information about where to mount the detector for the best coverage. There are three types of motion detectors; ultra-sonic, infrared, and microwave. Ultrasonic motion detectors send out a high-frequency signal that reflects off of objects in the protected area and returns to the detector. When something or someone moves in the protected area, the detector triggers the alarm. Infrared motion detectors are similar to ultrasonic detectors, except that they are sensitive to changes in infrared light waves or heat instead of sound waves. Your local Radio Shack store sells an infrared motion detector/transmitter for use with this system (Cat.No.49-2025). Microwave detectors also work in the same way as ultrasonic detectors, except that they use radio waves instead of ultrasonic sound to detect motion. CONNECTING A DEVICE TO THE DRY-CONTACT TERMINALS You can connect an external siren, security dialer, strobe light, or other optional security device to the base's dry-contact terminals. When a zone in the system is violated, the base's alarm sounds and the base activates the external device you connect. Refer to the owner's manual of the device you connect for specific connection instructions. Notes: * Any optional signaling devices you connect to the system are supplementary only. * Be sure all devices you connect are UL-listed. * If you connect an automatic dialer, set it to call a neighbor, friend or relative. Do not set it to call a police station number that was not specifically assigned for emergency calls of this type. * If you connect an external siren to the powered burglar or fire alarm outputs, the current drawn by the siren cannot exceed 600 mA. * If you connect external burglar and fire sirens, be sure you use two distinctive sounding sirens or a two-sound siren. OPTIONAL DEVICES You might want to add one or more of the following devices to expand your alarm system. Extra door/window sensor/transmitters (Cat. No. 49-2015) Extra smoke alarm siren detectors (Cat. No. 49-2020 for use with UL-approved smoke alarms, Cat. No. 49-458) Extra remote controls (up to four total) (Cat. No. 49-2030) PIR (Passive Infrared) motion detector (Cat. No. 49-2025) External siren (supplementary use only) (Cat. No. 49-487) (SMC/jlc-03/22/94)
