Wireless Home (490-2010) Installing the Smoke Siren Faxback Doc. # 8927 Alarm System PREPARING THE SMOKE ALARM SIREN DETECTOR The smoke alarm siren detector listens for the alarm siren from a separate smoke alarm. When the detector detects the siren, it sends a signal to the base, which sounds the system's alarm. This gives you extra protection if the smoke alarm is out of normal hearing range. Notes: * The smoke alarm siren detector is not a smoke detecting device. It only detects the sound from a smoke alarm. * We recommend that you use Radio Shack's Cat. No. 49-458 Smoke Alarm with the smoke Alarm siren detector. Other smoke alarms might not work properly. Be sure you test the detector as described in "Testing the Smoke Alarm Siren Detector" (Faxback Doc. # 8925). Follow these steps to install the smoke alarm siren detector's battery compartment cover by sliding it off. 1. Connect the terminals of an alkaline 9-volt battery (Cat. No. 23-553) to the connector inside the battery compartment, and place the battery inside the compartment. 2. Replace the battery compartment cover. MOUNTING THE SMOKE ALARM SIREN DETECTOR To ensure that the smoke alarm siren detector detects a smoke alarm's siren, mount the detector 4-6 inches from a UL-approved smoke alarm (Cat. No. 49-458). To mount the detector, drive one of the supplied screws at the desired mounting location, leaving about 1/4 inch of space between the screw head and the wall. Then place the detector's keyhole slot over the screw head and carefully pull down on the detector to secure it. After you mount the detector, be sure you test it as described in "Testing the Smoke Alarm Siren Detector" (Faxback Doc. # 8925). Notes: If the battery is not installed, the red safety tab inside the detector prevents you from pulling down the detector to secure it to a wall. Be sure you install the battery before you try to mount the detector. The smoke alarm siren detector can also detect other loud sounds (audio systems, musical instruments, and so on). Be sure you mount the detector in a location that minimizes false alarms. (SMC/jlc-03/22/94)
