The POWER indicator lights, the tape resets, and the TAD says "Set Time, date and remote code" (if they are not already set). NOTE: You must set MASTER POWER to ON to be able to set the TAD to answer calls from a remote phone. SETTING THE TIME, DATE AND REMOTE CODE Follow these steps to set the time and date for the TAD's clocks and the code you will use for remote operation. 1. Press SET. The TAD says, "Set voice mail. Voice mail off." Press SET again. The TAD says, "Time of day: Set hour" and announces the current TAD time. 2. Press FAST-F or REWIND until the TAD says the correct hour for the clock. Be sure to set a.m. or p.m. correctly. 3. Continue pressing SET, REWIND, and FAST-F, as necessary, to set the minutes, month, date, day, and security code. The TAD prompts you for each item. 4. After you set the third digit of the security code, press SET. The TAD announces the remote security code and then automatically stops. NOTES: If you wait more than 30 seconds to press a button during the above procedure, the TAD enters the stop mode. Repeat the procedure from Step 1. When you set the remote code, the TAD also records the voice-mail security code. See "Voice-Mail Code." After you set the time, date, and remote code, each time you press STOP when the TAD is in the stop or answer mode, the TAD announces the time, day, date, call count, and message count. To change the time, date, or remote code, repeatedly press SET until the TAD announces the item you want to change. Then press REWIND or FAST-F to change the setting. RECORDING THE OUTGOING ANNOUNCEMENT Before you can set the TAD to answer calls or record a voice-mail message, you must record the announcement that callers hear when the TAD answers their calls. Ask for the caller's name, phone number, and message. We recommend you write down you announcement before you record it. WARNING: Do not tell callers that you are not home. Instead say that you cannot come to the phone right now. NOTE: The announcement can be up to 7 1/2 minutes long (with the supplied cassette). However, the voice mail message also records on this tape. If you plan to use voice mail, be sure the outgoing announcements is short enough to allow enough space for the voice- mail message. Follow these steps to record you outgoing announcement. 1. Press hold down ANNOUNCE RECORD. The record indicator flashes, the outgoing announcement tape rewinds, and the TAD says "Record announcement." 2. After the record indicator stops flashing and a long beep sounds, speak in a normal voice from about 12 inches from the microphone (located on the front of the TAD). 3. When you finish speaking, press STOP. The outgoing announcement tape automatically rewinds. 4. Press ANNOUNCE RECORD. The TAD says "Play announcement" and plays the announcement. Adjust VOLUME. NOTES: The VOLUME control has no effect on the TAD's synthesized voice announcement. If the tape ends before you finish recording, eight beeps sound, the TAD says, "Error, Announcement tape," the tape rewinds, and the ANSWER, record, and VOICE MAIL indicators flash. In this case, press STOP. Then begin again at Step 1. If there is a pause of 2 seconds or more in the announcement. the TAD stops at the pause during playback and rewinds the tape. If this happens, re-record the announcement without the pause. If you reload the outgoing announcement cassette or when power is restored after a power failure, the outgoing announcement automatically plays. If there is nothing recorded on the tape, the TAD says, " No announcement. SETTING THE ANSWER SWITCH The ANSWER switch controls how long the TAD waits before it answers a call. Set the switch as follows: IMM (Immediate Answer) - The TAD answers a call with in about two rings. This reduces the time callers have to wait for the TAD to answer. DEL (Delayed Answer) The TAD answers a call after about four rings. This gives you time to answer a call before the TAD answers, TOL S (Toll Saver) - Use this setting if you will call by long-distance to play your messages. If there are no messages or you have already heard the messages with voice-mail off, the TAD answers after about four rings. Otherwise, the TAD answers after about two rings. This gives you time to hang up before the TAD answers so you can avoid unnecessary long-distance charges. NOTE: The toll saver setting does not count recorded memos or telephone conversations as new messages. SETTING THE INCOMING MESSAGE SWITCH The INCOMING MESSAGE switch determines whether the caller can leave a message and, if so, the maximum length of the message. ANN ONLY - Use this setting if you want the TAD to play the outgoing announcement without recording callers' messages. This setting is ideal for announcing the date and time of an upcoming event or other special information. Be sure the outgoing announcement makes it clear that the caller cannot leave a message. NOTE: You can still record memos and conversations with the setting. However, you must select another setting to play the memo or conversation. 30 SEC - limits each incoming message to 30 seconds. 3 MIN - limits each incoming message to 3 minutes. NOTE: The INCOMING MESSAGE setting does not affect voice mail. (CJD/all-7/19/94)
